OK first of all I should confess that I submitted this secret based in response to an overwrought, and drawn-out post on Tumblr about OMG THE FEEEEEEELZ over this stupid scene, and that's what hit my berserk button.

The problem (at least the problem I have) with BBC!Sherlock was that the initial marketing interviews made the showrunners out to be these two "we are so respectful of Canon / we discussed Canon for hours" dudes who were going to update ACD to the present day, but they were going to stay true to the stories themselves. Which A Study in Pink did very very well, for the most part.

Then the most vocal part of the fandom revealed itself to be campy and crazy, and I guess they went with the largest common denominator in the fandom, and turned the show into crazy camp. Plus, they departed entirely from Canon for two of the six episodes, despite setting themselves forward as wanting to update the Canon stories. Which turned out to be the opposite of what they actually did.

It was only halfway through the show, when they started really saying, repeatedly in the interviews (the ones I read anyway), that they wanted their show to be more like the adaptation with Basil Rathbone. Which is fine...but that show had nothing whatsoever to do with Canon, and so far, other than the pilot, neither has theirs, beyond mere mentions/references. I also have serious issues with their adaptation of SCAN, but it's...eh, I know, I know, don't like, don't watch (I won't be).

TL;DR; OP feels like the creators of the show pulled a bait-and-switch. It is only a TV show though LOL.
