Smutfic - tense?
(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)What do people here prefer?
Does anyone else find smut written in first/second person as awkward as I do?
Re: Smutfic - tense?
Present-tense is most comfortable for me when I'm writing, but I tend to switch a lot subconsciously. I just go with it until I figure out which one works better for the story, and then I edit it. So my guess is that they just feel like it flows better. For reading, I don't care either way, as long as it's good.
Re: Smutfic - tense?
(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)I...I can't with first- or second-person smutfic. For me, second-person is reserved for Choose Your Own Adventure books and specific narrated bits - anything else just feels weird. First-person makes me feel like I'm reading somebody's secret diary or something. It's okay for longer fics/stories that may or may not include sex, but as far as straight-up smut goes...please no.
Re: Smutfic - tense?
(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)I'm sure it's an outgrowth of RPing but good god there's a line. if this is the "trend" in fanfic now I'm noping right back out of fandom.
Re: Smutfic - tense?
I always RPed in past tense because it felt more like an actual story.
Re: Smutfic - tense?
(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)I can't at all with first/second. Awkward city.

Re: Smutfic - tense?
(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)I actually dig second person, also for porn, but it generally works before for me with pretty intense scenarios (D/s, brainwashing, stuff like that) and it does need a very skilled writer to keep it from feeling self-inserty. But if those two things are met, it can be really damn hot.
Re: Smutfic - tense?
I generally don't like present tense, largely because many people do it so artlessly.
First/third person past tense is sexy.
Re: Smutfic - tense?
(Anonymous) 2013-02-25 12:54 am (UTC)(link)because that's like, the only time I've read a second person smutfic that was actually good
Re: Smutfic - tense?
Okay, no. And definitely don't want to. Thanks for the suggestion, though.
You, Karkat, are totally manpreggers and you squeeze Terezi's breasts and Terezi is like 4H 4H MY B00BI35"
Re: Smutfic - tense?
(Anonymous) 2013-02-25 04:47 am (UTC)(link)(but really, subject matter aside, the writing is fantastic; it's a shame the author is anonymous, because I'd like to see what else they've written)
Re: Smutfic - tense?
(Anonymous) 2013-02-25 05:23 am (UTC)(link)Re: Smutfic - tense?
(Anonymous) 2013-02-25 01:45 am (UTC)(link)I cannot stand second person, and I will only tolerate first person if there is a very good reason for it. That's in general, not only pertaining to smut.
Re: Smutfic - tense?
(Anonymous) 2013-02-25 04:24 am (UTC)(link)I can't handle "you do this" and "you see this." NO I FUCKING DO NOT.
