Smutfic - tense?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I am skimming a bunch of smut fic from fandoms I'm not familitar with on AO3 for "inspiration", and I keep noticing most of them are written in present tense. Any reason why this is the norm?

What do people here prefer?

Does anyone else find smut written in first/second person as awkward as I do?

I don't think I've even seen any first person fic in a long time. I've always loved second person, though, and my current fandom has a lot of it because it's canon.

Present-tense is most comfortable for me when I'm writing, but I tend to switch a lot subconsciously. I just go with it until I figure out which one works better for the story, and then I edit it. So my guess is that they just feel like it flows better. For reading, I don't care either way, as long as it's good.

I'll sometimes write present tense for PWP just because of the "in the moment" feel of it. It might be the same for other people. I don't have a real preference, just as long as it's well-written.

I...I can't with first- or second-person smutfic. For me, second-person is reserved for Choose Your Own Adventure books and specific narrated bits - anything else just feels weird. First-person makes me feel like I'm reading somebody's secret diary or something. It's okay for longer fics/stories that may or may not include sex, but as far as straight-up smut goes...please no.

Oh my god this is exactly why I noped right out of AO3. I sort of forgot to read fanfic for a long time so when I came back after a few years to search for good stuff in my new fandoms, all I found was present-tense fic and it grates so hard I can't even.

I'm sure it's an outgrowth of RPing but good god there's a line. if this is the "trend" in fanfic now I'm noping right back out of fandom.

This!

I always RPed in past tense because it felt more like an actual story.

Huh. I've found the opposite, that most of it is in past tense. Which I prefer. Although my biggest issue is that they just pick one and stick with it. Switching tenses drives me batty.

I can't at all with first/second. Awkward city.

I feel like present tense in general keeps you "out" of the fic. You can't immerse yourself as well as past tense which might work depending on the fic you're writing. I like both tenses but yeah, pick one and stick to it.

I prefer present, I guess. Past for longer fic, but most of the stuff I read is just quick one-shot stuff and present works for that.

I actually dig second person, also for porn, but it generally works before for me with pretty intense scenarios (D/s, brainwashing, stuff like that) and it does need a very skilled writer to keep it from feeling self-inserty. But if those two things are met, it can be really damn hot.

I hate second-person. Absolutely hate it. It looks like really really blatant wish fulfillment fic to me. YOU ARE THE VRISKAnopleasestop

I generally don't like present tense, largely because many people do it so artlessly.

First/third person past tense is sexy.

have you read the karkat/terezi one where they both get pregnant (although it hasn't reached that part yet) on homesmut?

because that's like, the only time I've read a second person smutfic that was actually good

karkat/terezi one where they both get pregnant

Okay, no. And definitely don't want to. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

You, Karkat, are totally manpreggers and you squeeze Terezi's breasts and Terezi is like 4H 4H MY B00BI35"

ah, it's cool, it's not for everyone

(but really, subject matter aside, the writing is fantastic; it's a shame the author is anonymous, because I'd like to see what else they've written)

I actually like present tense, but IDK about present tense smut. It sounds really...awkward a lot of the time.

I have no preference whatsoever between present and past tense, as long as the writer knows what they are doing.

I cannot stand second person, and I will only tolerate first person if there is a very good reason for it. That's in general, not only pertaining to smut.

I can't handle "you do this" and "you see this." NO I FUCKING DO NOT.
