To me this worst part of that line is that it turns out to be patently untrue. This was a guy who later tried to save Davros. DAVROS, FFS!. Forget "second chances", he's giving people 20th, 50th, 100th chances...

Well, by Davros I think you could chalk it up to character development. But OTOH, it becomes untrue pretty much right away. I think the only time he stuck by that line was with the family of blood and the Racnoss, both of which were fairly extreme circumstances. So it comes off more like RTD wanted to just write a cool line/moment for its own sake.

Haha, true. And then he got mad that his clone killed Davros instead, and tried to pass it off as something that angry, vengeful Nine would've done.

ETA: When in fact, in Nine's very first episode he actually tried to bargain with the Nestene Consciousness until it panicked, attacked, and his life was in danger.

Well, he might have been referring more to the episode "Dalek", but yeah...JE was a clusterfuck of "huh wait what now"?

Yeah, I found that line in JE really baffling because Nine was actually pretty bad at being vengeful. (Bitter and angry, sure, but not vengeful.)

Pssh. Half the dialogue in Journey's End was just frantic attempts to ward off the cluterfuck of plotholes.

Basically, RTD wanted all the companions to come back. But wait, Rose would never leave the Doctor once she found him again. Well, she can't stay, and she can't just go back with zero resolution to her character. And she can't die, because that would undermine Donna's departure. So um, okay, a duplicate of the Doctor goes back with Rose. But why would she accept the duplicate? Um, because *insert bullshit excuse about needing to fix him because he's dangerous*
