If I remember correctly, it wasn't intended to be a joke at the expense of people with Down syndrome. The voice actress thought she was voicing a little boy pony and modeled the voice on a kid she knew from her neighborhood. Nobody caught the error until airtime.

Things got blown out of proportion on both sides. No, taking Derpy out didn't ruin the show, but it also wasn't meant to be an attack on disabled people.

Intentional or not, that's what she was. Whatever the inspiration for the voice, the end result was unmistakably Down syndrome.

No it wasn't. I know several Downs, poor things, and none of them sounded like that. None of them would be able to hold down a job like Derpy either. She is far too able to be a Downs.

Actually, as far as the show has shown, Ditzy Doo doesn't have a job. Her "job" is pure fanon.

Now, had her major shout out been her in the background with a mailbag, going from mailbox to mailbox and not that crap we got, then ok.

Actually she does have a job it's shown in the Pinkie Sense episode.

Well, it's completely different then to the fanon. But have we seen her doing said job sense? No? Then she doesn't have a job.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-25 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
what is a job sense?

*rolls eyes*

I meant since.

Fuck.

Apparently reading comprehension is sparse that people can't even understand a god damn miss-used word anymore.

whoa whoa clam yo tits man, I just wanted to check if you meant something else by job sense or if it was a legit mistake

In Feeling Pinkie Keen she seems to work for a moving service or the pony equivalent of FedEx- she's shown next to a delivery van that had just had a piano fall out of it and squash Twilight Sparkle.

[personal profile] thezmage 2013-02-25 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Anon says "hold down a job," so she's talking about her ability to keep it. Considering that we've only seen her in that job once, and while making a pretty big mistake, there's no reason to believe she kept it.

[personal profile] thezmage 2013-02-25 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
Corky from Life Goes On. Now you know one.

And, yeah, the job is pure fanon.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-25 01:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Having Down Syndrome does not automatically equal unable to hold a job. Some people, some jobs, sure, but this comment is inaccurate and gross.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-25 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
That's completely unfair. You can't take someone to task for unintentionally reading a certain way to certain people.

By your logic, I can freak out at people in real life who sound like they have Down syndrome but who really don't. I can attack them for making fun of people with Down, despite the fact that that is not what they are doing.
