Antarctic vs Artic cultural phrases question

(Anonymous) 2013-02-25 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
So just now I was commenting to my coworker on how I wish the AC was at Antarctic levels of cold and then I wondered, what does the northern hemisphere say when describing cold weather with the poles?

I personally never have used the poles to describe coldness, nor have I heard anyone do that.

Though, I did automatically read Antarctic levels as Artic levels, for some reason. Thinking about it, I probably would use Artic.

(I'm in the Northern Hemisphere).

I'm in the northern hemisphere and I'd say Artic. I think it's because the cold weather we experience probably comes down from the Artic region so its sometines a factual statement as well as sometimes a similie. If that makes sense?

Northern Hemispherean (???)

Around here (Western Europe), we mostly use the "it's colder than the North Pole" phrase or variants of it.

I'd probably say arctic. The meteorologists on the news talk about arctic air masses and things, so "arctic" is associated wuth cold.

I... would probably say Arctic, but would mentally interpret Antarctic to be even colder.
