the worst part is that, in English as second language school lessons, unless the teacher actually speaks English fluently you will never be taught about the changes in vowels (this might be different in actual dedicated language schools, though)
the textbooks we used sometimes mentioned them, but didn't went into much detail and focused more on grammar and orthography than in pronunciation, even the ones with the CDs and stuff
it took me years of watching TV shows and videos and so on to start actually hearing the variations
