Fashion advice

(Anonymous) 2013-02-25 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Fashionable nonnies of F!S, I require your assistance.
What would you wear for a first date with someone?

It's a date, so I should probably make some effort, but I also want to be comfortable, so not too formal, and arghghh clothes are difficult.

Help?

You didn't mention your gender or what kind of clothes you usually wear, but I (female) would probably go with nicer dark-wash jeans and a dressy top. I'm pretty casual, though, so I guess some girls might wear a dress or skirt?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-25 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm female (probably should've mentioned that.)

It's been really hot here lately (30+ degrees celcius) so i might have to wear a dress.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-25 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Well, do you have anything in mind? And what kind of things do you wear normally?

Re: Fashion advice

(Anonymous) 2013-02-25 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
uhhhhh... jeans, shirts. occasionally dresses. i'm pretty lazy when it comes to fashion.

It'd help to know the particulars, if you know them. Are you going someplace really nice or formal or just okay? Is it daytime or nighttime? Coffee shop date vs movies and dinner, etc.?

coffee shop

Re: Fashion advice

(Anonymous) 2013-02-25 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
it really, really depends on where you're going. how old are you?

Re: Fashion advice

(Anonymous) 2013-02-25 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
coffee shop. twenty.

Re: Fashion advice

well, first of all, you don't want to be uncomfortable. so you don't want to go so far outside of your norm that you feel inordinately self-conscious. so if you're used to wearing jeans and a t-shirt, i would probably stick with jeans. dark skinny jeans are good for looking slightly less casual if you pair them right. then choose a nice blouse that makes you feel pretty. give your hair some attention, whatever style you like, just make sure it looks polished and not sloppy. light makeup and some cute flats (i'm assuming heels would be uncomfortable for you, but if you're used to wearing them, they're good as well) and you're good to go.

thank you for the tips! this is great. :)

and i already have several pairs of ballet flats, they are a godsend for people like me who hate wearing heels.

Coffee shop, twenty years old, it's summer there? I'd go with a nice pair of jeans in a dark color, and a classy black top that's not too ornamented. The accessories would make the outfit. Wear sandals.

Alternatively, a Little Black Dress with not much ornamentation either is universal code for a not-too-formal-but-I-want-to-look-nice date.

Personally I think sandals are inappropriate for a first date. Unless you're going to the beach or something.

Do you mean lip-flops or pair of sandals? There's definitely a line between that. I don't see a problem with the latter as long they're more on the fancier end.

OP

I could always wear crocs.

Best response. Hahahapffft.

I think you'll do great on your date, by the way. :)

*points down to further comment*

Now I'm honestly confused, you people don't wear sandals in summer? Where are you from? O.o

Sandals are summer standard for summer footwear here, and we're not near the beach. It's a world of difference between a nicely designed (preferently leather) sandal, from a plastic toe-thong.

They might be standard in the summer, but sandals are just incredibly casual in my eyes unless they are heels.

Which anon is this?

Anyway, I didn't know if the OP used heels or not, so I didn't specify "heeled sandals". Though, I own several pairs of classy sandals with different degrees of heels (and some of them flat), so it's really a matter of design and not of heels for me.

(All the women here, no matter the ocasion or social upbringing, use sandals in summer. Maybe it's a cultural difference.)

I'm assuming OP? I'm the anon who said that there's a difference between sandals and flip-flops and replied to the crocs comment.

This is ayrt. Sorry, I'm bad about that.

Anyway, I don't know about most people here, whether they'd wear sandals on a first date or not. But most girls I know would probably consider sandals casual. *shrug* It would really depend on whether the date was casual, and IMO, a first date is not casual, no matter how much it appears to be. Sometimes it can be walking a fine line trying to appear casual while still trying to impress with your beauty and style. That's just how I feel, though.

Pro-sandal anon

Do you mind asking where you're from? (I'm from the Midwest US, by the way.) I feel like the sandal thing might be a genuine culture difference, and if that's the case, cool beans! If not, that's totes cool, too.

Denver (so also kind of midwest..ish. Or southwest. Or just west. I don't know, gah). I live in the heart of the city, though, and there are so many different types of people in this state that it's probably not very definitive.
