I am more outraged at how Brent Spiner continually dissed Spot. I know the dude doesn't like cats, but it's just so... mean the way he went about it. :(

There may have been an off-screen mauling involved, idk. Dogs know when they're not loved. Cats are just assholes.

Trust me, cats definitely know when they're not loved.

I get that there are people who don't like cats, and that's cool. There are some pets that I don't like. But I'm really annoyed by this idea that people have that cats can't be loving, or have varied personalities, or be molded to some extent by their owners. There are cats that are afraid of anyone new, and cats that love every human they come in contact with, and, yes, cats that are ornery and mean. There are cats that have been spoiled and act like it. There are cats that have been abused and act like it.

Maybe she was a new Spot because the old Spot met with an unfortunate accident? The cat was definitely a different cat. He's an android; maybe he just decided to call all his cats Spot?

Honestly though, this is a pretty easy thing to get wrong about cats. One day your tom is pregnant, and you feel a little silly but move on.

/haven't watched the show but would easily believe a sudden switch in references to the cat's gender

That happened to a friend with her rabbit. She did rename him and moved on.

Not OP. In most cases I'd agree, but I find it hard to believe an android would determine his pet's sex incorrectly.

I find it hard to believe they'd have a domestic animal on board a starship without it being very thoroughly examined.

I would believe it of Next Gen. Cause I presume it'd be sickbay's job. And Beverly once thought a guy was dead because she didn't know his species could go into self-induced stasis, and another time she didn't know an ambassador who was on their ship for an extended period was a conjoined species. And then there was the time she was like "Shit! Worf has two hearts?? How did I never notice this?"

Beverly Crusher is my favourite Trek character by miles, but her work ethic is for shit sometimes.

The Worf thing is inexcusable (though I'm willing to pass it off as explaining it out loud for the audience's benefit, as it sounded like she was surprised about what it was doing, not that it existed), but the other two were cases of biological facts that these species were trying to keep secret. Also, since they were both in Crusher focused episodes, likely specifically keeping it from her.

That happened to a family that lived next door to me when I was younger. One day they discovered that their son's cat, "Buddy," was pregnant. I only realized in retrospect that this meant they had never taken the cat to the vet, and was disturbed.

Yes, we actually had this problem with a litter of kittens. My ex took out the same kitten twice. So, five months later I'm thinking one of the "boys" is awful small and then happen to hold "him" in such a way that... oh, well shit then. (At least we didn't find out by her going in heat!)

I'd believe that Data had multiple cats and named them all Spot. It seems like something he would do.

Spot also changed breed a few times, so I feel justified in this head!canon.
