I don't think he was ever a "villain", though. (Quotation marks because the TV series is kinda ridiculous when it comes to the bad guys -- Klaus/Rebekah/whoever is misunderstood and just wants to be loved!)

I disagree. He raped Caroline and killed a whole bunch of people (including Matt's sister and his nephew), and was introduced to be an antagonist to Stephan. Plus he would have done who knows what to Elena if she hadn't been wearing her vervain necklace that time he tried to compel her.

I'd say that's pretty much a villain.

Yes. Him not being terrible sometimes doesn't excuse the fact that he's a shitty person.

And no, by saying that I'm not discounting the fact that other characters on the show (like his brother Stefan) are just as terrible.

Then Stefan is a villain too, you know. I see where you're coming from, don't get me wrong -- but you have to consider what the series is.

Oh yeah, he's definitely a villain too. In fact, I'd say that he's worse because he pretends that he's not a bad "person."

But that doesn't mean that Damon's not a villain too. And the show definitely framed him as such during that first season.

I'd say, he's definitly not a good person. He definitly wasn't in the beginning, but then again his treatment of Andie (in season two/three) is not any better than his treatment of Caroline. The only difference would be that the average viewer cares about Caroline, since she's a main character.

But I wouldn't say he ever was a villain, because the show never really treated him as one. Maybe one could say he was introduced as an antagonist to Stefan but about five episodes in they were something like reluctant allies. So while not being a good person, he still always was one of the characters we were supposed to root for.

same, but honestly given the corner they've shoe-horned stefan into where he can't grow or take responsibility for his actions...even though i prefer damon as a villain, i don't think they could have maintained it, so i'm glad he got his arc.

I liked him better as a villain too -- if only because I've yet to see an actual redemption story for him. I don't know how it can be a true redemption arc if the character refuses to apologize for the awful shit he/she has done. And Damon never did. He never acknowledged what he did to Caroline or Andie, let alone apologized for it. And I don't remember him apologizing to Stefan for murdering Lexie though I could've forgotten that. (He's done a lot of other terrible things but those are the ones that stand out for me.)

This isn't to say that Damon isn't interesting on a character-level but I've never bought the 'redemption arc' they've supposedly given him.
