NY address?

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2013-02-26 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
I'm writing a fic with a scene where someone gives a detective an address. I don't want to use a real one, so I just made shit up -- but I still want it to sound realistic. So! Take the following:

"He lives on Foster Street. I didn't get the precise address, but it's apparently close to some park — Wilson Park, I think it was."

Would anyone ever refer to a New York address like that? Maybe it's way too vague for a detective to be able to look up? I really don't know much about the city, so I'm hoping you guys can help me out! Thanks in advance :)

streets in nyc are mostly numbered streets and avenues unless they're very big famous streets. nothing has names

Ah, I see -- I clearly should've paid more attention to Google Maps. Thanks for letting me know!

i should say nothing has very recognisable* names

Or they'd refer to it by the name of the closest subway station.

Well, this is extremely inaccurate.

It depends on where in NYC you'd want to be? Queens street names/numbering is different from, like, Manhattan. You can check Google Maps (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=New+York,+NY&hl=en&sll=40.639294,-73.937279&sspn=0.060571,0.102654&oq=new+york+city&hnear=New+York&t=m&z=10) for the city and play around with things.

I wanted it to be a bit of a poor area, but I have no idea where that would be. Googling it mainly gave me a lot of conflicting opinions ("Brooklyn is so ghetto!" "Not anymore!" etc.), which is why I tried to avoid mentioning it at all.

This might help you: Rich Blocks Poor Blocks. It's a very easy to use and understand map that goes all the way down to street level in a given town/city.

If it's downtown Manhattan or most of the boros, this is entirely possible.

I live outside of the city, if you have other questions related to NYC.

Thank you so much for the offer! I'll definitely keep that in mind ♥

In New York, you'd refer to an address by the numbered street (1st Street, 2nd street, etc...) then by the nearest cross street, as far as I'm aware. (Cross-streets are generally named; both "Foster" and "Wilson" would not be out of place here.) So you could say "I think he's somewhere on 3rd and Foster." (Or "3rd and Wilson," if they're near Wilson Park, seeing as some smaller parks will be named after the street they face.)

General rule is, the bigger the city, the more often you're going to run into numbered and lettered streets before named streets.

That's really informative, thank you very much for taking the time to explain!

Numbered street along with avenue if it's in Manhattan, especially the farther up you go. But street names are totally plausible if it was downtown or in the other boroughs.

This is a Sherlock fic, isn't it? I've lived in America my whole life, in many states, and I've never heard a real person speak like this. (Write like this, maybe, but not speak like this).

Echoing an anon above -- after cross streets, nearest subway station (or bus stop) came to mind. Though it also depends who's giving an address, I'd think. Like someone who's not entirely familiar with an area and/or public transit might give the biggest or most famous landmark instead, or whatever landmark interests or is most relevant to them.

Also, knowing and referring to a smaller, not well-known park by name is a little surprising unless there's something distinguishing about it to whomever's mentioned it (e.g., it's a really scenic part of their jogging route, or there's a playground where they take their kids, or there's concerts there or something). Otherwise, ime people tend to refer to something else about it (a prominent statue, or if there's construction going on, and so on.)
