God, I love that letter so much. I quote it all the time, and at none of those times is it appropriate or does anyone get it. And yet, I persist!

It still cracks me up that the opposing team is played by Emma Thompson, Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry and Ben Elton...and that episode was a big break for all of them!

That episode is the big break for Ben Elton? But I thought he wrote The Young Ones.

He did, in fact. He, Rik, and Lise Mayer created and wrote it. (Alexei Sayle also had a hand in the writing, but I'm not sure just how much. Probably only his own bits, which were...very much his bits.)

Laurie, Fry, and Thompson's big break was actually a couple years earlier in The Cellar Tapes, which got them cast in There's Nothing To Worry About/Alfresco (alongside Ben Elton), the final series of which aired the same year as The Young Ones first series.
