Question for writers

Do you listen to music when you write? If so, what sort of music?

I do for the most part. Mostly it's a strange range of Tom Waits and Bauhaus.

Yes. Usually it varies with the story I'm writing. I'll try and listen to songs that fit the mood/setting/atmosphere.

Yes, all kinds.

More specifically, I sometimes have character/story playlists. However, I've found that the process of making the latter is just a way of procrastinating from actually writing the story, and what's more gives me less inclination to write it, so nowadays I just leave iTunes on shuffle whole library.

Character playlists for RPing still work fine, though. I start with a song or two that fits the character, then go through my iTunes library and throw anything that feels right in. It gets me to consider things about the character I might not have thought of, too. When I pick up new songs that I feel apply well to a character, they go right on the playlists.

I wish I could :( I can't focus when there's music playing.

Yes, constantly. I don't do it when I edit things, however.

The sort of music changes every month; right now it's "Trans-Siberian Orchestra", Wagner, a bit of Rhapsody, and, suddenly, "New Death Sensation" by Acid Bath. Don't seem to be getting over it.

Not usually, because it distracts me too much. Yes, even if it doesn't have words.

Yep. Currently have a Ke$ha playlist that plays nicely with my ADHD while I write :D

Re: Question for writers

(Anonymous) 2013-02-26 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
I do not. I will listen to music before writing to set a mood or whatever, but not during because I can't concentrate. A writer friend of mine always creates a soundtrack for the characters or story she's writing - could be anything she thinks fits - and listens to it continuously while writing.

I make playlists for whatever I'm writing that fits the general atmosphere I'm going for. Like, for the novel I'm working on that's set in Central Jersey, I have a lot of Springsteen/Gaslight Anthem going on.

yes. I stick mostly to orchestrated stuff and that which has a tempo that matches the pacing of the scene. When I am writing an exciting escape scene or something like that I listen to the Battlestar Galactica soundtracks lol

Re: Question for writers

(Anonymous) 2013-02-26 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
I often do, but sometimes I just can't concentrate on writing when music is playing.

If I do listen to music, it often is the same mixture of songs and soundtracks I usually listen to. The album that really gets me writing though is Rushes by The Fireman. There's just something about it that really makes you want to hit one key after the other.

Whatever I'm into at the moment. Earlier I was listening to classical music, which worked out so well! Grieg's Peer Gynt.

Yes, all the time. The type of music I like changes but lately I'm really liking dubstep violin.

Usually movies or TV. Doesn't matter which of the two, I just have to have something to go back and forth between.

Attention span issues ahoy. XD

I listen to whatever music reminds me of my characters while I'm thinking about writing, but when I actually get down to it I usually write best in complete silence. If I want music, something without lyrics is best. Contemporary piano, like Ludovico Einaudi, or once I tried a classical guitar station, which was nice.

But when I was working on my thesis novel, I actually wrote best to Hurricane by 30 Seconds to Mars, which was the strangest thing ever because it's not my usual genre and I would typically find that kind of sound the most distracting, but it fit the story and seemed to suck me into this vacuum of focus, every time. Really cool, actually.

Lately I've been listening to a lot of stuff like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2hJ0l64sRJc

IT MAKES EVERY SENTENCE FEEL LIKE PART OF A GRAND FANTASY SAGA

Really though, there's something about the epicness of it that helps me write faster, and ignore my inner-critic-who-hates-everything a bit more.

I love listening to music while I write. As for what I listen to, it depends on what song fits the mood of what I'm writing. Vienna Teng's songs cover most of my bases, but I tend to have a specific band for each fandom.

Owl City's blend of happy and upbeat with slightly creepy lyrics if you actually pay attention to them is perfect for Kingdom Hearts.

For some reason, Don McLean is my Final Fantasy VII writing music. (Probably because Sister Fatima is pretty much song about Aerith from Cloud's POV).

Angels and Airwaves was my Batman writing music back when I was still into that fandom.

If I do, it has to be something somewhat repetitive and preferably without vocals to distract me.

Ambience. It can only be ambience.

Re: Question for writers

I listen to music BEFORE I write. I'll make tons of playlists for music that fits the mood/plot/characters.

But while I'm writing I need silence.

Disposable pop music that I can hear without wanting to listen to.

If I don't have the soundtrack to the show I'm writing from, it's nearly impossible for me to write anything from it. It's like I get a better sense of what sounds IC when I can 'hear' the music in the background along with the scene I am creating.
