Realize that your mother has probably read much worse than that.

Does it get worse than that though?

I flipped through it in a grocery store and it was pretty tame compared to a lot of romance novels

That's nothing, I read Outlander after my mom kept begging me over and over and I experienced severe embarrassment reading all of the sex scenes and realized that my mom probably got aroused reading the same passages ughghgsgkkk

Ugh, yeah that sucks. The only books my mom would probably rec to me are stuff by Tom Clancy and Dan Brown. Incredibly mainstream and not my genre of choice in the slightest... but definitely could be a lot worse.

Well, my mom was always after me to read Anne McCaffrey and all those Dragonriders of Pern books which I always absolutely refused to read, so I figured I better concede and read SOMETHING she had recommended to me at some point. And I had just taken a Scottish history class and was REALLY into the 18th century, especially in Scotland because all sort of interesting stuff was happening there at the time... but I was pretty disappointed with Outlander in the end. I did try to read the second book in the series but I gave up about a third of the way into it

Oh, gross. But maybe she doesn't know the content and just picked it up because it's popular?

Re: My mother is reading 50 Shades of Gray

(Anonymous) 2013-02-26 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
LOL.

My mom's already read it. I bought the Twilight books for her a couple months after they came out, too, because I somehow got her interested in wanting to read them. But then, she used to read all the Mills & Boon books.

Don't worry, anon. Taste in literature has nothing to do with what someone is like as a person.

My dad was reading it about a month ago. When I brought it up, he said "First thing I thought was that it was for women". I'm pretty sure he's finished it but I haven't asked what he thought of it.

That's a book? As in, that's a thing that exists?

...Is it any good?

(different anon)

I just googled it and...

http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17410582-50-shades-of-gay

The summary screams "bad romance novel", but I imagine it can't be much worse than Fifty Shades of Grey itself.

I burned that book when I was done reading it. God, what a clusterfuck.

You might try frowning and pointing out problematic bits if she gushes over it or anything. It might help. Especially since there are soooo many problematic bits.

Well I've never owned 50 Shades of Gray (and never will), but I did have the pleasure of burning The Enduring Flame trilogy (not bad in the same way as 50 Shades at all, but pretty fucking terrible in its own right).

this conversation took place with my sister recently:

sister: ...oh god our mom is reading romance novels
me: I have known that for years.
sister: ...

not 50 Shades, thank goodness. But we know some of your pain.

Don't most people get the fuck over this somewhere around age 20?
