The Doctor Who double episode Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead.

No matter how often people try to convince me that it could be equated to living in all the books ever written, it just really creeps me out and seems like it would be absolute hell for such an independant, freedom- and adventure-loving character (let's just ignore some of the development in later series, shall we?).

The thing I don't get about that episode ending - on top of it being against everything that Moffat later set up River Song to be - is that, with a library and computer the size of the planet, it seems like basic Wi-Fi should be in its capabilities. Let River spend the remaining of existence as a computer program, hopping from galaxy to galaxy, destroying the economies of empires by wiping data from the nearest stock exchange whenever the mood strikes.

(Also I'm still not exactly sure what the difference between Donna getting "saved" and later reconstructed vs River being condemned to computer existence. Like make the argument that not enough of River's data got passed into the system to teleport, but then that'd mean River wouldn't really be "River" anyways...? IDEK.)

I always thought he was either planning to figure out a way to get her out of the computer later, or just assumed that if his future self sent back the data-thing-a-ma-bob, it was the right thing to do.

Seriously, though, she seemed pretty happy with what happened, so Future!Doc (Eleven? Twelve? Thirteen?) who saw her the day before she went back to the library must've not been bullshitting when he stuck the data-thing in the screwdriver.

I didn't really mind the episode's ending simply because the Doctor's future self must've put some thought into it. Plus, that plot point was kind of about Ten being frantic about saving everyone ever all the time, and there's always the possibility for him to go back and erase the file or ask River if she wants to be erased once Eleven or future-incarnation-number-whatever finally gets his head on a bit straighter.

However, my dream ending for that episode would have been for the data ghost in the communicator to not actually be River, but to be a message from the future Doctor, who smugly tells Ten to cheer up, emo Time Lord, it's not that bad, she had a great life so quit worrying.

Followed by Donna laughing her ass off at him and hooting about how silly he is, while he splutters in bewilderment.

And helps push him into getting his shit together in time to be all kinds of brilliant and classy and grapple with his demons and come out on top and not trip over his issues and fall flat on his face in the season finale like some Aeschylus hero on weed.

...yes, I was going to mention Journey's End on this thread. Why did you ask? ;)
