That's not really what happened.

After Sybil died, Edith thought she and Mary could be BFFs. One of Mary's characteristics is that she's pretty brutally honest. She's not going to lie and pretend that they're going to be best friends from here on out. Their personalities don't mesh well and there's a lot of bad history between them. But the rest of the scene is Mary telling Edith that even if they're not best friends, they ARE sisters and they can be there for each other in this moment of grief. AND THEN SHE HUGS EDITH.

And Mary was hardly a bitch after that. Mary seemed to be getting along perfectly well in 3x06 when they were on the grounds together when Anna found them and informed them of Bates imminent release from prison. Mary makes some snide remarks re: Gregson because she thinks he's suspicious. And Mary is actually right. Gregson IS shady. But I don't understand characterizing Mary as a bitch or a vindictive harpy.

About the only thing I can remember her being bitchy about is Gregson.

She also does that obnoxious snot about Edith writing about men in the trenches. I was amused, because there was truth in what Mary said. But it was also mean-spirited and cruel, which is also very Mary.

exactly. one of the things i like most about mary is her honesty, not only with others but also with herself. she knows and accepts her flaws. she knows that she and edith do not see the world in the same way, hence her line about them probably never becoming friends. but she does want them to be better sisters for each other. all of the stuff towards gregson was certainly because he is extremely shady, and because she doesn't believe he's even remotely good enough to be with his sister. maybe that's not her call to make, but she is genuinely trying to look out for edith.

Yes, she is so honest with herself when she covered up the death of the guy in her bed!
She really looked out for Edith when she lied to Anthony Strallan about Edith and wasn't revengeful in the slightest!

Honestly, her snideness towards Gregson kind of sealed her Big Sister Cred for me. She was bitchy towards Gregson because she knew that creeper was creeping around her little sister, and she may not be nice about it, but she'll take care of the one she has left.

As if Mary isn't as bitchy and lying as the others - Edith did wrote the brutal truth about the attaché's death in Mary's bed (brutally honest!) but Mary did lie to Sir Anthony Strallan telling him that Edith is only leading him on for her own amusement. That's totally not bitchy and vindictive...

I don't think that you understand what being brutally honest means.

Also we're talking about series 3, not series 1. Mary has grown up a lot over the course of the show.
