Way out in the boonies of America (at least on the East Coast, where I am), very old houses that were built before standard plumbing often have separate areas. One room used to be the outhouse, away from the main house, and another room inside the house was the bathing area.

That's the way my house is structured where I grew up, though thankfully by the time I was alive, the bathing room was fully upgraded with a toilet and running water. Though we still have the old outhouse attached to the woodshed, which is attached to the kitchen.

Way out in the country in the New England area, USA, and also in a house that was built before indoor plumbing. However we just have one tiny room shoehorned into the middle of the house with toilet and bathing area in one room.

I'm curious whereabouts you are on the east coast, because in my experience with old farm houses that were built before indoor plumbing it's more that the room is kind of random that was turned into the bathroom, but not that it is two separate rooms. I'm just curious if it's just something I haven't seen or if it would be more of a geographic/cultural difference.

Northern New York, near Canada, if that makes any difference.

As far as I know, in the area where I grew up, there's a washroom right off the kitchen where bathing in general gets done. This is usually the case, because the kitchen is generally the main thruway, since it was pretty heavily trafficked to receive and disperse goods, and it washes up easily.

So you can take your scummy self through the kitchen to get to the washroom, and wash up before dinner, without trekking filth from work through the more public living areas, like the dining room and living room/parlor.

The outhouse is generally kept apart from the bathing area and the rest of the house, so that the smell doesn't bother anyone. Not quite so much of a consideration when plumbing was introduced, so generally the bathing area was modified to accommodate a toilet.

Interesting! I have a thing for old houses and their general layouts and geographic trends.

Also, the main water pump, and the stove, were both in the kitchen, so with this layout, you did not have to drag heavy buckets of hot water over long distances.

This as well! I just kind of forgot, since my house in particular had no pumps inside the house, just one outside that was fairly close to the kitchen/wood house entrance.
