Med school rejection :(

(Anonymous) 2013-02-26 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Last Friday, my husband got a letter back from the med school he applied to and he got rejected. He's taking it really badly. He called this morning about it, and they said he needed to work on his personal statement and do more community service. I tell him he can always apply next year because from what our friends told us, first-time applicants are rejected more often than not (idk how true this is). Now that we know what didn't go right, he can come back with a stronger application.

Anyway, anyone else have a similar story? Did you all apply again and got in? Went with your Plan B? Flipped some tables and found another career? I'd love to hear it.

Not me, but my older sister did. And getting into med/grad school is /haaaard/. Your husband shouldn't take it too hard.

Ugh. Personal statements. I hate personal statements. I have never been satisfied with a single personal statement I've written in my entire life.

I'm glad they were able to tell him exactly what to improve on though. Best of luck to him for next time. <3

Pretty much the same thing with me and getting into grad shool. First time I got shot down, I took some courses on my own, polished up my interview a lot (though honestly I'd say 60% of it was me being nervous and that fucking up my aura/presentation) and came back and nailed it.

So don't let him despair too long. This is a stumbling block, not a pit.

Took me four tries to get into pharmacy school. :) The competition is tough, but well worth it.

My top choice doctoral program rejected me a week ago, so I understand this feeling only too well =/ So far I have been rejected from two programs and have yet to hear back from the third, still crossing my fingers on that one.

I'm going into psychology, not medical school, but my plan B is to enroll in a master's program if I get rejected from all three doctoral programs (I already have one that will take me) and try again once I finish that. A couple people I know have done that, so I'm hoping it works for me if it comes to that.

But it's been a lot harder than I was expecting, and honestly, I'm not really expecting to get into the third program at this point. So reapplication will probably be my best bet. It'll take a little longer but I'm still determined to get there eventually. Best of luck to your husband, OP!

med school is hard as fuck to get into especially with more and more people looking to get into fields with more job security. top tier schools have acceptance rates of around 1-2% and even mediocre medical schools can have acceptance rates in the single digits. next time, apply to a broader range & number of schools (15-20 is about usual for most applicants--it's a pretty big financial burden though) including all of your state schools, have an mcat score over 30 (no idea what his score is), a good gpa, and go through most of the hoops that premeds have to jump through (shadowing, hospital volunteering, community service, research).

good luck to your husband!
