I think the adaptation of Holmes' character is decent enough. It emphasizes different elements of the character than other adaptations, certainly, but I think most of what the character does is justifiable from the canon (especially given that the character is basically impossible to adapt perfectly to the screen, IMO). And the adaptation of Watson is fucking perfect, to me - I really feel that it's the best Watson on stage or screen period. Huge fan of the way they envisioned the character and the performance.

I think the real problem is with the plots. It really seems like at the end of the day the writers just aren't much good at writing mysteries. The plots are often mind-bogglingly stupid, they go on far too long, and they're ridiculously implausible. They're just poor plots. And I think the... I'm not sure the word for it - some combination of the setting, the atmosphere, and I guess what you could call the dramatic context of the series doesn't work for me, either - Holmes' character is placed in a fundamentally different relation to the world around him, I think, and not just because it's a different time period.

So, yeah, serviceable-to-excellent characterization and great acting, in the service of farcical plots.
