Same was equally true, if not more so, of Studio 60. That had such a great cast and it was so, so bad. It still amazes me that Sorkin managed to write such terrible comedy sketches when he actually had a member of the Kids in the Hall in the freaking cast.

Studio 60 gives me so much second-hand embarrassment I can't watch it at all. And this is coming from a gigantic fan of The West Wing. A lot of amazingly talented writers write utterly appalling crap when their choices for what they're allowed to write aren't brutally restricted and edited by sane, average, impartial people who can actually understand that this stuff is going to be airing on TV.

A+

Exactly what I say about Joss Whedon, too.

What is this show?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
The Newsroom. Aaron Sorkin's HBO joint.

I like this show. I don't think it's wasting its potential.

I've only seen the first 3 episodes. I liked the first one, but was put off by the next two. I don't like it when the women in a show are characterized by their love lives. Especially when McKenzie had so much potential in the pilot.

No idea what the show is, but going by the shot.
Front and Center - Confident Older White Guy
On the left side - Confident Middle Aged White Guy
Beside CMAWG - White Woman leaning in twisted towards him while still facing audience, obviously going "I'm part of him"
On the floor - Another white female, under everyone else, head tilted 'vulnerably'
In Chair - Uncomfortable White guy
Beside him - White Girl all twisted up an off-balance and looking off camera
Side Front - Aggressively Nonchalant White Guy
Crammed in back behind everyone - "Look! There's one non-whitey! We're not racist! Now who let the coffee guy in the shot and OH CRAP! Right, sorry, quota guy"

There was potential?

Well, they're all really good actors.

But, yes, arguably people should have known that Sorkin was gonna Sorkin.

The actress sitting on the floor is Asian.

...and she spends 90% of the show playing the most competent, professional, sane character in the cast, which makes it all the more D: when that gets overwritten by the kind of attitudes behind the pose they made her take in this shot.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt - I thought she was Jorja Fox. No wonder they made her sit on the floor. A woman AND Asian. I'm surprised she's not hiding behind one of the computers in the background.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
Isn't she part asian tho?

Olivia Munn's mother is Chinese, her father was white German/Irish, she spent a large part of her childhood being raised in Japan, and she self-identifies as Asian. Add that up as you will.

Allison Pill looks really good in this pic. *_*

I had to watch the first episode for work and I couldn't see why people were raving about Sorkin, given that it's the only thing I've ever seen of his. But the writing was cliched and the female characters were only there to prop up the men and affirm how awesome they are. Even female producer who should be brilliant has to be defined by her previous relationship with the male newsreader.
