In other news any movie that portrays sexism but doesn't include a character blatantly saying "Gee I sure dislike the sexism inherent in my historical period" is pro-patriarchy.

yep

I really don't get OP's logic at all

Woah woah woah. You don't go around saying things like, "This sexism is bad" and "The patriarchy is what makes it hard for me to do things as a woman"? It must be your internal misogynist :( I will pray for you. No wait. That would be erasing your spiritual identity. I will unleash the hate of 1000 anons on you for not checking your privilege or thinking everything is horribly sexist.

I keep trying to tell her this. That she should be perpetually complaining and having no goals because this world is too horrible for those.

But she keeps on keeping on as a strong independent woman.

It's a damn shame how all this misogyny has ruined her. In a better world...

I love that because it sounds like something one of the G-Men from Psychonauts would say.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
Fuck off, ya little twerp. That has nothing to do with the secret.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
your elegant and clever rhetoric on sexist issues on this comm is always so enlightening.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-28 09:04 am (UTC)(link)
When every single character believes bisexuality doesn't exist, it seems a pretty fair bet the writers believe it too, or at least don't give a fuck if they're offending people.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
I never watched past episode 3 so I missed the biphobic stuff but now I guess I'm glad I didn't get into the show. Unfortunately, it's rare to find a show that handles lesbian, bisexual, gay and transgender issues well. You usually have to settle for shows that do a decent job with one or two of those.

Lost Girl.

+1 to lost girl

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
meh, i'd have to see the show to comment. the whole 'straight girl pretending to be bi to appeal to men' is something i've seen happen enough that they might have a point. (but might not, as i said, i'd have to see the show.)

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
The show might or not be biphobic or problematic in its presentation. I don't know. But the OP's logic is not right at all. Because it's simply not the case that you have to have some tolerant character there to say "ACTUALLY BI PEOPLE ARE RAD". That's just not how it works. You can have a show that presents a realistic depiction of characters who are biphobic, and it can still be good.

It's such a strange requirement that OP is demanding that I really don't get it. I mean, yes, it's one thing if the universe treats bisexuality as a negative thing, it's another thing entirely if characters within the universe treat bisexuality as a negative thing, and OP's reasons for rejecting the second point make no sense. Again, the show might indeed be biphobic; I haven't seen it. But if it is, it's not for the reason OP outlined.

Yeah, but from my experience they don't initiate it, their BOYFRIENDS tell them, "kiss each other, it's hot". And they do it, and take pics too.

Still haven't heard any of them counter with "Okay, but then you will kiss that dude there".

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
that certainly happens, but i've known girls who have just coyly inserted into conversations with the guys they're talking to that they're bi, or "bi-curious". no kissing involved.

Just nitpicking here...

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
I don't really watch the show but I have seen a few episodes and I'm pretty sure there was another bisexual (secondary) character.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Ick, is that what happens?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Not having watched the show, I can't comment. From what you describe, it does sound a bit proscriptive rather than descriptive, especially with the "cheating fake lesbian" bit.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 08:08 am (UTC)(link)
idk what the OP is talking about with "cheating fake lesbian." What happened was that the two female characters had gone out in the past and broken up, and in the interim one of them ended up getting married to a man. There was no cheating involved and the marriage was never portrayed as a happy one.

What show is this?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
chicago fire

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
Your last line implies there's an gay character on this show, besides the fake lesbian? is that true?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
Yup. Blonde paramedic roughly in the center of the secret.

Argh argh

[personal profile] philippos42 2013-03-10 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Oh good lord.

The other characters hate Clarice because she broke Leslie's heart. And Clarice is not a "fake lesbian"! If anything other than bi, Clarice reads as, "plays straight to get babies."

The show can be infuriating in other ways, but let's not represent it as other than what it is.
