That or the stronger he becomes with his mutant abilities the weaker his fashion sense becomes. It's a trade off. It would explain why weaker mutant are usually dressed in their street clothes while more powerful ones are always in the most ridiculous costumes.

I can just picture him putting together that costume himself. Looking at the helmet he took from his arch nemesis just before he killed him horribly, the man he'd been hunting for most of his life in order to avenge the death of his mother, and deciding to spray paint it pink and purple and glue little horns on the front. And then sew a matching cape.

What I wonder about is what kind of impression is he trying to make? Maybe he just wants people to remember him. I am fairly certain no one is going to forget the angry six foot tall dude in a red and purple outfit + cape + silly helmets. He wouldn't even have to use his powers. Just walk around.

I thought that costume was a perfect way to end a movie seemingly designed to show what a bunch of uncool dorks they all were as kids. I did not expect to come out of the theatre needing a red-hot shower to wash away the secondhand embarassment. :|

Tbh I was fine until I saw the prongs on the helmet then I lost it into a fit of giggles in the cinema. No one ever pulls off the helmet well(McKellen looks much better but still somewhat goofy) but the prongs just made it look so much worse.

Honestly, for a movie set in the 60's, that was one of the few realistic moments in abrasively loud, visually-explosive decades fashion. Everyone else was dressed far too subtly and modern-version-of-retro.
