Being sick

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I swear to god, I want to beat my body for being so fail.

I think I'm getting sick again. I'm so damn tired, my joints are killing me, my muscles are twitching from fatigue even when I don't do much more than walk half a mile. Starting to get that annoying sore glands in my neck thing.

My body demands from like 9-12 hours of sleep, which is ridiculous. I usually get by between 6 and 7 no problem, but for whatever reason I have been sleeping hard and long.

This is not my year for being healthy. I was sick for 3 months until I got antibiotics, then I had a really intense and draining work schedule, and now I think my body is either belatedly trying to recover, or it's taking a nosedive again.

Any advice? Tips to perk up my performance?

Thanks for the ideas, I appreciate it.

TMI:

I am a little worried about the vitamin thing. I'm obviously deficient, but whenever I do something like drink one of those Vitamin Water things, it sort of overdoses me and I end up with diarrhea. So I'm a little anxious about dosing myself up with vitamins.

You might be reacting to something other than the vitamins in those - I'd recommend straight-up supplements. You can look the different vitamins up on Wikipedia to see what certain overdose thresholds and effects are for each one, so you have a better idea of what to look out for.

First off, thank you hugely for suggesting vitamin D to me, and especially how I might get it in digestible forms. :)

I hadn't considered it until now, and when I went to google it, some of my specific problems popped up. Even some unexpected ones, like the mucles aches and twitching.

Thank you! I will be scouting for foods to up my vitamin D intake.

Pick up some Vitamin C gummies. It's ridiculously hard to overdose on it, so popping 3 or 4 gummies a day should give your immune system a good boost (and you'll just eliminate any excess). Drink lots of water, either bottled or filtered (tap may have things that a battered immune system can't handle properly), and make sure you're eating well to give your body the fuel it needs.

Hope you feel better soon! Constant sickness is no fun, and it sounds like you've taken a beating from the previous bout and the stress :(

Ooh, gummies sound like a smart choice. Good suggestion!

Sorry for not having anything to add, but I just wanted to say I hope you feel better, and maybe things will stop being so hectic soon so you can recover properly. If not...well, just try to take care of yourself the best you can. :(

I've been sick on and off since October, you have my condolences.

are you getting enough sun? that's important too

also, is there a reason you can't get the nutrients from the foods instead of supplements (money, physical availability, can't digest properly, etc.)?
because you're less likely to overdose that way

Eh it's kind of a circle jerk of health. I get sick, so my appetite plummets. I don't eat/drink enough, I don't get enough nutrients. Plus the being ill wipes out my nutrients, too.

Plus I'm poor and my food is mostly microwaved shit bought in bulk cause it's cheap and therefore not very nutritious.

But I think that if I look for foods commonly marketed towards kids, they tend to be vitamin enriched, and cheap for the sake of WIC recipients. So that's maybe a plan?

oh, that sucks, sorry :(

yeah, the kids food is probably not a bad idea

you don't really lose anything by trying if you can get it cheap, and if it's really making a difference in getting you healthier you should notice after a while, no?

wait, it just occurred to me: be careful with artificial colorants; they can cause allergies and in general aren't very healthy, and kids food tends to have ridiculous colors

Just be careful not to overdo the vitamin C: too much can give you the runs.

See a doctor and get some tests done, it sounds like there is something going on with you. It might be digestive related (things like low stomach acid, candida, celiac disease etc can go undiagnosed for pretty much ever and cause symptoms like what you're experiencing).

Beyond that, try attending to your lymphatic system (for emptying toxins). Get a rebounder if you have the money (I got one two years ago, and I haven't been sick once since), or you could do dry brushing as well.

Hope something gives for you :)

OK so this is probably late, but I thought I'd give you a tip anyway.

the last time I felt a cold coming on, I got:

-honey
-ginger tea
-crystallized ginger

and I mixed the honey in the tea and guzzled that all day, and kept snacking on ginger pieces. (onions are also really good for you, but i can't eat them.)

it actually worked. so maybe it'll work for you, or possibly give your immune system a bit of a boost?

Are you able to see a doctor? I ask because while others have suggested immune boosting supplements, I have had similar issues and it turns out that I have an autoimmune disorder. Meaning, boosting my immune system makes me feel worse and progresses my condition.

Listen to your body and do what it tells you. At the moment, that means rest.

I speak as someone who has had chronic fatigue syndrome for years, simply as a result of trying to keep going.
