Favorite Thing You've Written

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
So, a lot of us write. We usually like the complete things we put out, but sometimes (for me, anyway) there are particular lines that stick with us and make us proud -- even if they're in one of our lesser works.

So what's a favorite thing you've written?

I was going to make this a "favorite thing you've written today" thread, but decided to expand it out in case people hadn't written anything today. But I am celebrating finally realizing that about 85 percent of a bunch of scenes that have been floating around in my head with no story to attach them to could actually all fit together in one angsty sexy story.

I've only been writing it for an hour, and only have 800 words so far, but this is a snip of dialogue I'm particularly happy with, even in it's unbeta'd rough form:

"I thought you were dead," he said quietly, his voice shaking slightly. "When we got to that building, and I saw you on the floor, for a second, I thought you were dead, and a little piece of me died, too. And when I realized that you weren't. That you were okay..." Ryan swallowed hard and clenced his fists before wiping stubbornly at his eyes. He exhaled a sound that was almost a chuckle. "I guess it doesn't matter, does it?" he finished.

A ghost talking to a human about taking a visible form:
"I didn't ever light up before Olivette came back. Forty-seven years, I never lit up. I didn't know how. Turns out there isn't really any how. You just have to want to."

I know you're not looking for editing input here but if you just cut that last dialogue tag the whole thing becomes way stronger

Eh, good advice. I'll take it! :)

From my Sherlock BBC fic Solvent, in which Sherlock uses a sensory deprivation tank:

This what why he was here, what he longed for whenever he entered the tank: The dissolution of his physical body, so there was nothing but his mind, his thoughts.

Some of my poetry. I've been published, although that one isn't my #1 favorite. But I'm afraid I'm not going share it here, sorry.

The only thing I've ever really finished. A Two Companion Gap for Doctor Who. It's a canon-compliant Doctor/Rose ship and Doctor/Amy friendship fic. I kind of screwed myself over with it though since I posted it to LJ first, but wanted to re-edit one scene before I posted the final part to FFN and put that off for over a year... whoops.

Favorite fic: "This Has Been: "A Stupid Thought I Had to Share With All of You" http://archiveofourown.org/works/580724/chapters/1042606

It's a canon compliant (well, pre-season 4, it's a tiny bit negated now but not much really) story where the Study Group is in the Kickpuncher fandom and the dean is the mod of kickpunchercomm but no one knows anyone else is in the fandom at the beginning of the story. Hijinks ensue. I just really loved writing it and the mode of storytelling is entirely through digital fandom means like fandomwank and fandomsecrets and anon memes and fic recs etc.

Favorite line(s): "He’s never cried on the moon before, not even when he walked on it in the Dreamtorium for the first time. He remembers the dust giving satisfyingly under his feet and somewhere in his head he knew it was beautiful, but Inspector Spacetime saw the moon all the time and had never once cried over that or anything else, so Abed didn’t either when he borrowed his body.

Troy cried the first time, but then Troy has never understood a willful absence of feeling or of anything at all, for that matter. Abed doesn’t think that there is ever too much of the present for Troy; it’s one of the things he loves about him, and it’s also a thing that he knows he will never quite understand. For Abed, the present is always too much; if Troy were gone, Abed isn’t sure he would ever remember again how to be."

I usually end up hating everything I write a few minutes after I put it down, because I'm incredibly perfectionist when it comes to anything I write.

But I honestly do like my shitty Homestuck fanfic. It's just silly lighthearted adventures about FedoraFreak (because I thought it was high time he had a story), but I have a lot of fun writing it, and for once, I actually like what I've done. And other people seem to like it, too.
