Instant messaging....help?

[personal profile] tabaqui 2013-02-27 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Some people love it, some people hate it. I use it to chat with a few close friends on a daily basis, and we use Yahoo Messenger. Problem is - it's a fairly horrible IM, and one of my friends is having real issues with it.

Gmail chat is even worse, utterly horrifying, and i'm a bit nervous about randomly dl'ing and trying other ones.

Any suggestions? None of us what stuff that makes noise, we don't care about 'themes', mostly chat, file-sharing and the ability to customize font size for us old, half-blind fogies.

IRC? Takes a bit of know how and I'm not the best to ask questions about it, but might be something to look into.

Skypechat might work, too?

Did IIRC years and years ago. It was okay, but...i don't think anybody else would be comfortable with it.

I was under the impression that Skype was camera/mic, so...i guess i'll have to look into that.

I've heard Trillian is good, but I've never used it myself.

I am going to recommend Pidgin - which is not an instant-messaging protocol, but an instant-messaging client that allows you to use multiple protocols simultaneously. It's rad. Afaik it has support for Yahoo Messenger.

Okay, i don't know enough about a 'client' to know why this is a good thing. It's a separate program that...uses YM to chat? I have no idea.

what OS do you use?
if you use a client (like Pidgin / Trillian for Windows, Adium fos OS X) , you can turn off sounds and customize font sizes - and you can still use your Yahoo accounts.

Get an older version of Trillian (I use 4.2) and turn off the sounds.

Third 'aye' for Trillian.... :)

...I use AIM through iChat (OS X 10.6 - "Messages" is shit in later versions, but Adium seems to work well enough as a replacement). In Adium, you can reformat incoming messages to be more readable.

Don't you have to have an AOL account to use AIM?

See, i thought Skype was all camera/mic. I guess i need to investigate.

Why not use Skype? I use it almost exclusively for IMing, you can turn off the sounds and change both the font and the font size (the emoticons too. I hate emoticons). File-sharing works too of course.

Must investigate Skype, i thought it was strictly camera/mic.

because it's a security risk (no matter what they say about not saving your messages on their servers for your own safety).

I seconding Skype. It does multi-person chat really easy as well as normal 1 one 1 chat. You can even do multi-person voice chat which my D&D group uses on a weekly basis.

I don't have a mic and really kind of hate voice chat, but i'll have to look into it otherwise.

Seconding Trillian, I've used it for years and I'm never going back. I've heard great things about Pidgin as well.

I wouldn't actually suggest Skype if you're mostly just doing one-on-one text chat... it can be a bit of a resource hog and it's a bit too hefty for a chat client for my tastes. Their group chat support is pretty good though.

Re: Instant messaging....help?

[personal profile] tabaqui 2013-02-27 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
It is mostly one-on-one, text-only, so yeah - i don't really want a huge program clogging up my works.

Fourth 'aye' for Trillian - thanks!

I'm a long-time fan of Trillian; I've used it since 2004, and I love the features they add. The fact that they have ads now is annoying but IMO it is worth the $20 or so, especially since you get all upgrades for that version, number, and they usually last 2-3yrs or so. Plus, I was especially pleased with their customer service when I bought 4.0 and about a week later they announced 5.0... when I went to buy 5.0 I got it for $5 because I had bought 4.0 so recently.

I also like that there are mobile versions and a web-based version so I can log into it from basically anywhere.

However, a free version that allows you to log-in to multiple IM protocols is Pidgin, as has been mentioned. It's not as pretty as Trillian, nor does it have as many bells and whistles, but it's functional. I actually use it to connect to Dreamwidth IRC because it handles message tracking better. (There is a plugin that lets me track how many new messages are in the taskbar, vs. Trillian which just flashes.)

Meebo.com also works if you want something purely browser based!

Chiming in for Trillian. It's old tech, but it updates often enough to be relevant, and you can use it to talk to everyone, no matter what program they're on (it links to AIM, MSN, ICQ, Yahoo, etc.).
