OK new question: Is it possible to have spur-of-the-moment, just-some-lube anal sex without it being absolutely awful for everyone involved? I know plenty of prep is a very good thing, and the safest way to go about things, but I'm kind of imagining a Brokeback Mountain moment for them.

depends on the person. a lot of people cry "but that's not realistic!!" when it happens but I've known people who say they don't need much prep because they have anal sex fairly often. and on the other hand, some people need a lot of prep even if they do have anal often.

well, what i got from brokeback mountain was that it basically went 'penis, in', with absolutely *zero* prep. i think that would hurt anybody. but there's probably a difference between no prep and a little prep. like, a minute or so of fingering would probably at the very least make the muscle a little more pliant and less tense, so that they were at least more ready for the larger intrusion. but i don't know if you want to include even that much prep. anyway, the whole 'penis, in' thing...i can't read that without thinking OUCH.

i've never had anal sex before, though, so you can take all that with a grain of salt.

Yes! I hate the extended prep thing. I don't do any stretching or classic slash "one finger two finger three finger" routines because I don't like that part. Just lots of lube is fine with me. YMMV

Under no circumstances could I imagine enjoying it without lube, though.

I'd love more BBM moments in fic. It's fiction, after all. The one thing that keeps turning me off slash is the endless repetition of 1 finger, 2 fingers, 3 fingers, cock.

So, yeah, ymmv. You can never please everyone, so my suggestion would be to simply write what turns you on.

(Also, here's some TMI: anal sex is about relaxation, so the mental state plays a big role. For some people, the simple adrenaline rush of quick, frantic sex can work better than lots of lube and stretching. I don't like fingering at all, for some probably psychological reason I can't explain, and therefore it does the opposite of making me feel relaxed. So, well, don't underestimate the psychology of it all, it's not just a ring of muscles you have to keep in mind. If you feel that spur-of-the-moment sex is what feels most in character, write that. There's no need to force a long preparation scene if it doesn't feel right.)

It has more to do with mental preparation that physical, TBH. If the person on the receiving end really wants it, then no, a good shot of lube is really all they need. OTOH, if the receiver is anxious, uncertain, freaked out, nervous, etc. then a lot more prep would be advisable, if only to get them to relax.
