Window's 3.1 isn't 30 years old. It didn't come out until like 90 or maybe even 91. I know because it was my introduction to Windows; we had Macs and some crappy IBM machine with some long-forgotten OS before that.

I don't think personal computers as we know them have even been around for thirty years o_O I'm only 24 and I know my family got our first computer shortly after I was born, and I'm pretty sure the thing ran MS-DOS and playing Pong with my brother was legit the most amazing thing ever.

I remember the old Windows color schemes, though! I was so annoyed when my parents upgraded our system and I couldn't customize the colors anymore :(

It was 29 years ago that personal computers really became a thing. Before 1984, computers were impractical or unattainable for personal/home use due to everything ranging from size to cost to purpose. The earliest versions of Windows (pre-3.1) weren't widely used. Computer companies mostly had their own OSes and MS-DOS was the only common denominator in non Apple systems. But since most schools had Apple computers and the parents needed their kids to teach them how to use a computer, that was what most people bought for their homes until Windows 3.1 came out. Microsoft brokered deals with corporations to sell computers with their software on it and flooded the business market with an OS that was incompatible with the computers people had in their homes. Since it was a more stable OS and so many people took their work home with them, it was logical for everyone to replace their Macs with PCs. The ease of customizing Windows has always been the icing on the cake. Today you can do so much more with a Mac but first you have to learn how and you always run the risk of doing irreparable damage. No worries with Windows because it will tell you if you're about to do something that will bork your system.

I got a commodore 64 when I was a kid in 1983 or 1984 or so. It was ancient and didn't do much, but I played games and did word processing and stuff on it. And I feel really old.
