Hah, no, this particular character was only 18/19 and was never shown or stated to have any actual experience whatsoever. His stated attraction to women is ridiculously over-the-top (to the point that I've headcanoned that it's to mask his touchy-feely-ness with the other guys). I've always written him as pansexual, especially for other reasons related to his particular character, and never denied that he was attracted to women, but somebody actually threatened to punch me in the face over it :| (Over IM, but still.)

I agree with everything you said, though, especially about not respecting the time period. If you can't or don't want to take into account the struggles a person in a same-sex relationship/with same-sex affections would face in their canon society, then just write an AU or something :/
