Yeah, OP didn't make a good implication there. Though I assumed a lot of it's coming from the fact that there's enough of a trend with characters being "straight until they meet the other half of the OTP" that suggests people are less eager to make characters just generally queer, with all the experiences that can come with giving them a history of being knowingly gay. What I've rarely read in fic and would like to see more of is one of the characters having known for a while that they're attracted to the same sex, being comfortable with that, and still just not having had the opportunity or enough of an inclination before.

Try ACD canon Sherlock Holmes fic. There's a ton of that trope there. Although often there's also some internalised homophobia, because of the time period, most of it's about Holmes' mistrust of intimacy.
