Well, that's kind of an unfortunate side effect of everything being from Harry's perspective only. If it's not on "screen" for him, it basically doesn't happen.

That doesn't excuse poor writing, of course. I was just sayin'.

The thing about that excuse is that you can use it to justify anything happening off screen, but people only ever use it to justify Remus/Tonks not being sketchy and weird.

I'm only a casual fan, and not in fandom. I brought it up because I thought it was the obvious explanation and defense for how it sort of came out of nowhere. Similar to how Ginny has no personality because she's never in the books, and then suddenly BAM Harry's Perfect Girl.

Like I said, it doesn't justify the bad writing. Either more of it should have been written in, or it should have been written out.

I agree with you that JKR needed to either flesh these things out more or else skip them entirely (skipping might've been the better choice - she doesn't seem to have a good handle on romance). I'm just saying that usually when you bring up what was specifically shown in the books as an argument against the pairing as written, fans of the canon pairing defend it by claiming that just because mutual happiness, love, and affection wasn't shown doesn't mean it didn't happen. But in the same breath, they strike down Remus/Sirius shippers by claiming that "nothing like that was ever shown in canon." It's one thing to speculate what might've been happening off screen, but they seem to believe that just because their speculation supports a canon ship, then their speculations must be canon, as well. But they're no more justified than any other speculation of non-canon events :/ That's why I'm annoyed at this whole idea that the limited POV of the books is why we got a limited view of what was going on - that only holds true in non-fiction. Fiction writers have control over what the audience knows, and when a writer can't support a ship they claim is happy and wonderful, that's just bad writing. Remus and Tonks just flat out weren't written well.

No? They use it to defend Ginny's characterization, for one, comparing it to Neville's for another. And why Dumbledore had to be revealed to be gay in an interview with the author.

I hate Remus/Tonks more than anyone you can find (rabid SB/RL shipper for the entire three-year summer) but let's be real, here.

So Dumbledore was supposed to walk around with a sing that said "I'm gay"? Are people not gay unless they explicitly say "By the way, I'm gay". I don't know about you but I don't go around declaring I'm bisexual to everyone I meet.

It was pretty clear he was in love with Grinelwald in the book.

No, but he could have told Harry when they were havinbg the big, emotional conversation while dead, since they were talking about love anyway.

It was pretty clear to anyone with the faintest slash goggles, which doesn't count as being canon.
