Tumbleweeds?

What you call tumbleweeds, I grew up calling "Russian thistles." I never heard of "tumbleweeds" until I moved to LA county. I'm from Bakersfield, which is a linguistic anomaly because we're full of descendents of Okies/other midwest migrants. What does the rest of f!s call those things and where are you from?

You've never seen a western in your life? There's tumbleweeds all over those films and everyone calls them "tumbleweeds."

I've seen Russian thistles in westerns but I can't think of a single one where a character refers to them by any name at all. They're in the background, but who actually talks about them??

Well, there's a familiar western song that has popped up in more than one western movie and even non-western movies like the Big Lebowski. It's called the "Tumbling Tumbleweeds" You've probably heard the music before but never the words.

Tumbleweeds. I'm from Northern California. I've always heard of them as tumbleweeds and I've never heard of Russian thistle till now.

I grew up in Chicago, Illinois and now live in Knoxville, Tennessee and I've never known them as anything but tumbleweeds.

I'm from LA and we call them tumbleweeds here too. BUT! I have heard of Russian thistles! I watched the Ken Burns Dust Bowl thing last year and several of the people interviewed (children/teens in the Dust Bowl) called them that. So you might be on to something re: Okies and migrants.
