BBC Sherlock

(Anonymous) 2013-03-01 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
It's kind of disappointing. I just finished the last ep, and while I enjoyed it, I can't help but feel it would be so much better it would be if it weren't so camp, even sappy at times, to the point of being ridiculous. The writing just isn't very good. Also there is no subtlety or complexity and a lot of the times things just don't add up, or are too obvious. I realize that the writers of the show are not going to be ACD, but seriously, it's just so...unsophisticated. Bah. It has its moments, though.

I agree, fwiw.

Were you the same anon who posted a few days ago about how you were about to watch the series?

Yes, this version of Sherlock is campy. But you've got to look at Moffat's other works. They all have a strong camp theme to them. Yes, even Jekyll. It's like watching a Tarantino film and being disappointed that the majority of the scenes were nothing but dialog.

you say this as though ACD was never camp or ridiculous

Oh, it's not the camp that bothers me, it's how they started out faithful to Canon, then when they realized 90% of the fandom had never read ACD and had no intentions of doing so, they proceeded to eviscerate Canon and started going for cheap laughs like the Rathbone movies.

Huh. Not a show I generally associate with cheap laughs. Still, I think I get your point. I don't enjoy where they've gone majorly off-track with the feel of the ACD canon, though I do love their take on Moriarty on the whole, YMMV. You're right, though, they're not aiming for litfans and probably stopped after ASiP.

The camp doesn't feel as out of place in ACD.

No but seriously I just finished reading a book on the (factual not the made-up crazycakes version) origins of the Mormon religious movement, and at the time ACD was writing STUD the Brits were obsessed by Smith and his NRM. So we look at STUD today and think "And suddenly, Mormons! ...wait, whut?" but ACD actually was current for his time when writing about it because everyone was fascinated with it, mostly in a this-is-a-train-wreck-but-it's-a-NEW-train-wreck-we-have-never-seen-before way.

You know, I love how camp and sappy Sherlock is at times, but I'm just so glad someone else recognizes it and doesn't think the show is just so DEEP and BRILLIANT and INTELLECTUAL.

I think it started out good, then inevitably slid downhill the further they got from Canon.

That's pretty much what I think of Sherlock, but at the same time I kind of love it and I apparently spent the last two months writing Sherlock/Lestrade fic, which I will probably never post because there's already enough Sherlock fic in the world.

I've started watching Luther, which is not at all like Sherlock in tone, but reminds me of it because it requires its strong cast to deliver some pretty dumb lines.

Yeah, I hear you. I think it's clever, but in a pretty superficial way, if that makes any sense. It's pretty, the dialogue is snappy, but it's not deep and the mysteries aren't very well done. Moriarty in particular is just ridiculous and embarrassing.

As someone who agrees with all your complaints about Sherlock, may I recommend Elementary to you, anon? Because its a longer series, its pacing in terms of character development, plot and comic relief is a lot better than Sherlock's, and it also lacks a certain pomposity in its writing that really annoyed with Moffat/Gatiss. Also, being midway through series 1 of Elementary at the moment, you can already tell that it at least has the potential to tell a more sophisticated and emotionally satisfying story than Sherlock (which, again, is partly because of the time it has to tell its story).

I was feeling the show until they had an actor with a bad American accent, especially after a snobby English person on an unrelated forum was going on about how easy it was to fake an American accent just a couple weeks prior to me watching Sherlock for the first time.

I do like Sherlock, but I do agree that it lacks subtlety and complexity, and yes! Some points of the show are just way too obvious.

"Also there is no subtlety or complexity..."

haha oh wow the fandom would disagree.

Don't get me wrong, I agree with you. Just, some of the fans would have you think this was actually a smart show compared to general shit thanks to Poe's Law, yes, rather than the fanservicey campy fun romp it actually is.
