I don't know, but probably, if they have the Kindle Paperwhite available that country. It's really easy to do, you just have to register on that country's site and set your location to residing within that country. Also, once your Kindle is registered, you can only use that country's site (so no going back and forth between the US site and that one).

Ah, damn. I had been hopeful... I'm just looking for certain editions of a few books so it wouldn't make too much sense to register to the Amazon site I need. I wonder if a friend who lives there and would use that particular amazon website could gift me a book...

So if I have a Japanese kindle, I can register it with the US site? But I'd lose my books, so might not be worth it.

I haven't tried it, but I believe you could. And yes, you would lose your books. However, you can back them up so they wouldn't be lost forever.
