Right? Like I'm totally gonna believe that a full-fledged, experienced Auror, in the midst of a war, is suddenly going to lose her magical aptitude just because some boy she likes doesn't like her back. Heartbreak sucks and all, but it was really disappointing that apparently "boohoo, my crush doesn't return my feelings" trumped, "holy shit, there's a war going on where my abilities are necessary."

Like...seriously?!

I still hold that she had a general meltdown because of a LOT of things. I feel like she was forcing herself to be a bouncy castle in OoTP, and when that ended up not working out so well for her (between Sirius dying, a few other Order members being killed and Remus going off to spy on the guy who tried to kill him when he was three), she just sort of... deflated. I thought the end of HBP she kind of kicked her own ass back into shape. But maybe that was wishful thinking.

i don't think it's unbelievable at all, and i think it's a bit shitty that anybody suggest that people have a choice in whether heartbreak seriously affects them and their capacity, like they're pathetic or weak if that happens, and so obviously superior if it doesn't.

She didn't lose her magical aptitude. She just lost her morphing abilities (I forget what they were called). I think it said right in the book. She was still doing her job as an Auror. She just wasn't morphing her features like she usually did.

I was pretty sure Tonks chose to look that way because she was trying to be more like Remus.
