I should state now that this isn't an anti-pot rant. I don't care what you do in the privacy of your own home, I just don't want it anywhere near me.

So, for the past few months there has been cigar wrappers and dime bags in my hallway. I assumed it was the neighbors and there really wasn't anything I could do about it because I didn't want to start waves/I have nowhere else I can live. Cut to about a week ago when pot started to stream through my vents. SO badly that I couldn't breathe/my heart started to race/my head hurt badly. I finally got the nerve to go downstairs today and....it was two black teenage boys I had never seen before. They tried to hide their faces and walked up the stairs, completely ignoring my questions.

My frontdoor is hard to close, so I guess they've been getting into my building that way. They also appear to break in through the back basement door whenever the front is locked properly. The basement REEKS of pot and is littered in cigar wrappers and dime bags. I'm planning on cleaning it out tomorrow/airing it out as best as I can. I don't know what to do now, though. Gangs are a huge issue in this city and there have been drivebys in the past by my building. I'm sort of afraid they might try to do something. Plus, they've been smoking pot in my basement for a good click this past few days and I don't know if they'll stop. I'm going to tell housing about it next week (They took apart all our smoke alarms, a huge no-no) but I don't know what else I can do. If they want to keep coming here they will :/.

UGH. Why can't people do illegal shit in their own homes???

If you smell 'smoke' and these two are breaking in, time to call the cops the next time you see it. 911 is your friend at this point, but I'd also let the operator know that you need no sirens, so these idiots can be caught and hauled away for trespassing, if nothing else.

Housing authority/landlord ought to fix the door so it closes and make sure someone can't break in through the back/basement, but I know how likely that is to happen.

Definitely go to housing, also call the cops. Just do whatever you can to get them to stop smoking in your building, especially if they are disabling fire alarms.

This has nothing to do with being pro or anti pot, they are invading your home space and taking down fire alarms.

And for the record, it's okay to be pissed that pot smoke is getting in your apartment, even if it was 100% legal I don't want it stinking up my place (same goes for cigarette smoke) and I am glad I live in a place where it isn't legal to smoke indoors.

All of this. I'm all for your right to do whatever you want in your own home but smoke is RANCID and awful. Also trespassing??? BLATANTLY compromising the danger of you and everyone else who lives there by taking apart the smoke alarms??? Not fucking okay.

Cops. Don't speak to them directly, definitely don't confront them. Next time you smell something, call the cops.

What the hell, why is the headline here about pot and not about, you know, the people breaking into your fucking house. Kind of buried the lede there.

Anyway, yeah, call the cops. I don't have a problem with pot but you can't have people breaking into your house and crap like that, for God's sake.

I hadn't called the cops because I assumed they were my neighbors, and that's how they were getting into the basement (you need a key for the front door and the basement door) I only found out a few hours ago that it was two teenage boys. They left really quickly when I went confronted them. If they come back I will call the cops.

Yeah that's what I'm saying - you have an extremely legitimate, serious issue, but at first I took your post for a pot rant, partly because of the way you set it up, but partly because you do seem to emphasize the marijuana aspect of the thing. Which, whatever your feelings are, I don't have an argument about. But to me, people breaking into your house is more serious than people smoking pot around you, in pretty much any scenario.

I wouldn't have minded the pot if it wasn't filling my entire apartment with smoke to the point where I cannot breathe/I start to feel physically ill. They're both legitimate issues in my opinion.

The point of the heading was to make it clear that it wasn't a rant about pot and you decided that meant it was...?

Also, sorry, but filling someone's house up with the rancid, headache-inducing smoke of a mind-altering drug is a pretty big freaking deal. So is trespassing. They both are.

who cares if they are or are not? I'd rat on them anyway the second their illegal life choices became an inconvenience to me.

You'd be surprised at what behaviour some people will condone just because pot is involved. I have no doubt that since they believe that pot is a totally harmless drug that is Oppressed By The MAN, the OP is an asshole for wanting to do something about those kids and is probably over-reacting to the smoke. Ergo the 'not anti-pot' warning.

That's exactly it, which I wanted to avoid. I'm not mad that they were smoking pot, I'm upset that they broke into my apartment building and took apart smoke alarms-all so they could smoke pot. I live a few blocks down from a HS, so I now think they're doing it so they can have a 'safe haven' to smoke pot+skip class.

Why is it important that they are black? Protip: It's not.

Because my neighbors are all Spanish, so that is how I knew they didn't live here.

Ah. In future, if you're going to specify someone's race relating to a crime, you might specify why -- if it's even relevant, and I'm not sure it is here, because all that matters to us is that you knew they weren't your neighbors.

Note: I'm not trying to be all "OMG UR RACIST!" I'm just pointing out that some phrasings do have unfortunate racial undertones and it's good to be aware of them.

Are you seriously comparing "they were black" to "they were teenagers"?

The "black" thing really stood out. If OP had pointed out that it was being used as an identifier it wouldn't have bothered me, but I did wonder why they did that.

The teenage thing is definitely relevant. They're unsupervised teens doing illegal, dangerous and harmful shit.

Apologies, it was never my intention to make it racial. I typed that up in a daze and didn't realize until much later that I had forgotten to mention that's how I knew they didn't live in the building-as there are only three other apartments here and they're all lived in.

Oh, it's fine. It stood out but the explanation makes sense.

It is, yeah. I'm really hoping they don't come back, since I caught them in the act. This building rarely has housing around, so I'm going to have to contact them about the smoke alarms. They tore down three of them, and even moved the fire extinguisher from the basement into the first floor hallway for some reason. Even burned holes in the stairs leading to the basement (They're carpeted, I assumed that's how they were putting out their blunts :/)

Definitely contact whoever is in charge of your building sooner rather than later. Make sure they are aware of the disabled smoke alarms as well as the problems with both doors.

If the kids come back - even if they don't actually get back into the building but appear to be trying - call the police. The "no siren" request sugggested above sounds like a good idea.

one time i left my house to walk to school and some random dude came out of my garage?? i just kinda ran to school and then called my mom to let her know and she said the entire place reeked of pot. really fucking weird tbh. people looking for a safe place to get high will go to great lengths, it seems.

but yeah fuck those guys, ring up the coppers.
