Pretty pretty dresses

(Anonymous) 2013-03-02 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
I'm trying to decide on an outfit for an event I'm going to in a couple of months. It's sort of semi-formal, in the sense that people will be dressed up, probably in nice dresses and suits, but it's unlikely that anyone else will be wearing actual ball gown style dresses.

I've found a gorgeous ball gown, and an equally gorgeous quite formal but slightly less over the top chiffon dress.

Pros for the gown is that the color is amazing, it looks amazing on me, it feels amazing, everything is basically amazing about it. Pros for the chiffon dress is that it's probably closer to what everyone else is wearing, I'd probably have more use for it in the future, it's floaty and ethereal and looks like some kind of cross between something that belongs in a regency drama and in Lord of the Rings, which I love.

Cons for the gown is that it's just huge and not practical at all and would not quite fit in at the event (not inappropriate, I'd just be the only one to interpret "formal" as "ball gown"). Cons for the chiffon is that it's a delicate color (I'm clumsy as hell, it's a drawback), and while it fits me really well, it's not quite as amazing a look as the gown.

On the one hand... I want to run around in a ball gown so badly. On the other hand, the other dress is amazing too and probably the "better" (as in safer, more practical) choice. They're both really expensive, so it feels even more important that I make the right choice and I'm just so torn. Help?

Hi Kaylee!

Ball gowns are inappropriate for a semi-formal event. It will make you look like someone who doesn't understand social codes.

Fortunately I'm close to the hosts and have their blessing to wear whatever I want (I specifically asked this scenario), so I won't look awkward to anyone whose opinion I care about. Good point, though.

Pics, please? If there are pictures of them online, can you link?

I can't remember the brands, and googling what I do remember isn't turning up anything, dammit. Sorry :/

DA

Maybe you could find a pic of something that's similar?

It sounds like the chiffon dress will fit in more, and you might get more use out of it too. Since you've already said they're both expensive I believe the chiffon would be the 'smarter' choice since you'd more than likely be able to wear it again.

However, you said you had the blessing from the hosts to wear whatever you want, so...do what you want. Either way you should be fine.

I agree. I would go with the chiffon--you like it, and it'll be able to serve you in events where you only can wear semi-formal. Not to mention ballgowns can be kind of impractical for moving.

I would go with whichever costs less, personally.

Yeah, but if you're going to spend a lot of money either way on something that is not necessary, I don't think it's wiser to just go cheaper. If you're truly being economical, go for the one that will last you the longest and have the most use. Buying an expensive car you take care of saves a lot more money than buying a ton of cheap cars.

Yeah, I was really unclear. I meant whichever costs less overall, taking into consideration whether it can be reused, whether it will last, how much it cost to keep clean, etc. My point in noting my cheapness was to relay that I'd pretty much gloss over which one would be preferable as a look.

If I were you, I'd go in the ball gown. Goddamn, if I could afford a beautiful ball gown and go to an event where I could act all fancy with it, I'd be happy for the rest of my life.

But that's me. It's true that you'll probably find more use for the other dress, but you wouldn't want to sigh over the ball gown later, wishing you'd bought it instead.

As some one who loves pretty pretty dresses and owns both a ball gown and two slightly less formal dresses:

The ball gown is gorgoeus, no question, but I wore it exactly once, whereas the other two dresses I could wear to other events as well. As much as I loved wearing the ball gown, in hindsight it just wasn't worth the money it cost. :/

Besides, even if you have the go-ahead from the hosts, are you sure that you'll be able to get the most out of wearing the ball gown, or might the fact that you're overdressed suck some of the joy out of it? Personally, I wouldn't be able to feel comfortable if I was the only one dressed that formally.

I'd say chiffon too, purely because you'd use it more often. :)

I'd say definitely go for the chiffon for the event, but don't pass up the gown. Ask for it as an early birthday/xmas present combined from your family or SO or something. And damn girl, FIND an excuse to wear that thing. I still occasionally wear my wedding dress around the house, because dude, I look fabulous, and the postman's face when I open the door is priceless.
