In the book, the inmates were all but raped at the orders of Rached, though. No-one was ever in the right through the whole thing. The movie got rather watered-down in places because woah.

Which is to say no-one deserved it and everyone was fucked up and that was the point.

Everyone was screwed, but McMurphy was a persistent, determined, and criminal threat. It was either kill him, let him go until he got lucky and raped or killed someone else, or go for a less lethal but certain means of control. He deserved it, and it was the right call.

Not saying that McMurphey wasn't a crappy person/loser, but he never murdered or raped anyone. He was a thief and was in trouble for statutory rape.

I think the point is we never knew (in the movie, at least) if it was consensual or not, how old the minor was etc.

If he had sex with a willing 17-year-old, he's still a dirty old man, but not exactly a menace to society that needs to be kept away from the public for their own safety.

IIRC he at least claims she was willing, although that's obviously pretty dubious.

I'm wholly against the death penalty, and I feel like I'd rather be executed than have a lobotomy.

Me too.I'll take death over brain damage, and I hope I'd get euthanized if it would ever come to that.

It's been ages since i've read the book or seen the movie.... What, exactly, did MacMurphy do? I thought he was kind of a small-time thief or something, and faked being mentally ill so he wouldn't have to do 'hard time' in a 'real' prison....?

And thus the lobotomy was even more awful because he wasn't actually all that 'bad' a person, just someone that the hospital hierarchy wouldn't tolerate.

Stat rape. And probably it was a legitimate forcible rape as well as stat.

So he raped a minor and instead of actual jail he faked his way into the mental hospital? Did they change that in the movie? I simply cannot remember that *at all*.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-02 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
They kept it in, but it was treated pretty lightly as if it were no big deal. I suppose that is consistent with how rape was treated back in the day though.

Huh, okay. He's pretty indefensible, in that case.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-02 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
He is described as a repeat offender in both movie and book too.

You have pretty much zero understanding of historical context besides "the past was bad lol." Congratulations.

He only got lobotomized after he sexually assaulted Ratched

[personal profile] tabaqui 2013-03-02 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
No, i know, but what did he do to be arrested for in the first place? I can't remember, but my brain wants to say he was just small-time repeat offender and wanted and 'easy' time in the mental hospital so faked being ill.....

(Anonymous) 2013-03-02 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, I get the feeling a lot of people don't realize the reason why he attacked her is because she was making life unlivable for the inmates, including having the orderlies gang rape them every time they acted up.

Everything was fucked up and horrible. The point was that patients didn't go there to get better -- they went there to be shelved and ignored and abused.

This. I first saw it when I was still in high school too young perhaps. But the way I understood it is how basically once you got into that system you had zero rights as a person and you were never getting out.
