Mother rant because I need to get this out

(Anonymous) 2013-03-02 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
My mother has Celiacs. (She is gluten intolerant.) I take it very seriously. I am the one who is constantly searching for new gluten-free foods so she doesn't have to change her old diet that much. Which means a grocery run by me can take all day because one store will have this gluten free loaf of bread while another will have the gluten free crackers that she likes and yet another store will have the gluten free pasta that she usually has for lunch. But I do this grocery run because I don't want her to get sick.

Now I have bad allergies. I don't have Celiacs but I am allergic to things such a animal dander, pollen and perfumes. I have to be careful because my allergies can trigger my asthma. (It's one of the reasons I don't go to concerts unless I know the venue will be smoke free.)

Here's the rant part. I am very careful with my mom's intolerance because I don't want her to get sick. She on the other hand isn't of mine. She sprays the house with perfumed air fresheners, perfumes, scented candles and puts on anything else that is perfumed. All of which trigger my allergies which ends usually with me grabbing my inhaler to calm my asthma.

I complain about this but her response is often, "It's only one spritz." Or "It's my house. I can do what I want." To even, "Oh, you are exaggerating. Your allergies aren't that bad. It's all in your head."

To say the least I am furious. I won't give up getting her gluten free items out of spite because I don't want her to get sick. I only wish she would show me the same courtesy.

I can't really give you any advice, but I can tell you you're not the only one. The way it sounds, your mom and my mom could be the same person, just different issues.

My mom actually has about your level of sensitivity to perfumes - no asthma, though - so I always try to be careful about it. But it took five years to get her to start caring about how I react to cigarette smoke. When I met my boyfriend, I was actually glad I had someone with asthma coming over so she wouldn't dismiss it. Apparently, coughing your lungs out and getting near-migraines aren't a big deal unless you're a visitor.

It's not about the allergies, really. It's that it's your mom, and she's supposed to not be careless with you. It just really sucks when the people who are supposed to take care of you, don't.

I'm sorry that your mother isn't as careful of your health as you are of hers. You are being an awesome kid!

I'm a mom with celiacs and my kids take care to read labels for me and/or run to the store for things when I need them to. Your mom is lucky that you care enough to help her. Thanks for reminding me to thank them for that.

You sound like a great person and a good kid and your mom should appreciate the effort you go to keep her healthy. I think it's only fair she watches out for you too, and it sounds like she wouldn't have to do much, which is always a positive thing. However, she clearly isn't taking your allergies seriously and I'm not sure what you can do to make her do otherwise...

:( IDK...maybe you could print out some articles about it and show them to her? It might not change anything though.

I don't have much advice but I can sympathise. I have migraine scent triggers, and my dad is not so respectful of it... whereas I grew up basically being the label-checker for everything because my dad is incredibly allergic to MSG. I guess migraines aren't as serious? -_-
