I worked in prison, in administration, and spent some time in the lifer unit. My job was to review their files in prep for their hearings.





One inmate with a history of sexual assault on children lured a 4 year old into an apartment, raped him on a bed and then slashed his throat and left him to bleed out. The tenant of that apartment came home later while the toddler's mother and the landlord frantically looked for him, and found him that way.

This inmate, once incarcerated, continued to prey on new, younger, inmates. Without killing them.

I don't believe sweeping lobotomies for ALL offenders is the answer? But some of them need to be permanently leashed, and if they manage to circumvent the death penalty, a lobotomy is viable solution for me.

So you've over identified with your care group and are ignoring the ongoing threat the represent. Great, well done. Crusaders like you are the people who put sex offenders back on the streets to rape again and increasing the risk to the public. I guess I can see why you defend the right of rapists to rape now, I'm moving you up to accomplice. From the sounds of things a lobotomy would not represent any great reduction in anything except that cohort's ability to repeat offend. It certainly would not make their QoL worse, and would make the world a safer place.

If it's easier for you to believe I exaggerated that crime, go ahead. But that child lived a short life and died in horrible pain and terror. Hand-waving it away doesn't make it actually go away.

Oh, and the inmate? He wasn't abused as a child, in any fashion. He's just a natural born predator and he needed the death penalty. Still does.

You're sorry for me? I'm glad for you - glad you are equipped with the necessary empathy to adequately do your job. If you didn't see them as human, you couldn't do shit for them. So good for you. I work with LCSWs and Psych doctors and I wouldn't have their strength to work with monsters and see them as human. But because I believe everyone deserves an adequate defense, I'm glad some people have what it takes.

However let me just tell you that everyone at some point in their lives have a choice - a choice not to harm, and not to kill. Plenty of people are abused horribly as children, in utero, all that jazz. Plenty of those people make the choice not to abuse as they've been abused. And so the people who CHOOSE to prey on other innocents because THEY were innocent once and someone preyed on them deserve to the consequences of those choices, whatever the jury or society deems. That 4 year old DID NOT DESERVE what happened to him and BECAUSE I CARE, I told the details of his story because he deserves to be remembered in some fashion, because that child lived and died and it deserves to be acknowledged. You want to treat these offenders, I'll give you kudos, but don't you dare mock me for sharing "the gory details." The gory details are why you and I have a job. The gory details are why that inmate is in the hole the rest of his miserable, stinking life. The gory details shouldn't EVER BE whitewashed and hand-waved away as too harsh for delicate sensibilities and eyes.

So fuck you.

Fair enough.

I guess I should say after having to deal with his file for a week straight, and having to read and reread and copy his arrest and psych reports, I LEGIT hate this individual. He hasn't shown an ounce of regret or remorse and that triggers me to no end.

But I've also encountered someone who is as you described and I had nothing but sympathy for him. Alcohol fetal syndrome, head trauma, abuse in the form of starvation before he was 6 years old. He's not a sex offender, but I really believe he needed someone like you to advocate for him, and to help him before he became what he became in prison. Some of them can be saved, just not the kind of inmate I first described.

I'm going to step away now because it's obvious to me as well that we both have Work Issues going on. Peace. :)

That is. completely horrifying. I keep forgetting people like that really exist, and I can't imagine being that mom.

I honestly wonder why people like that are incarcerated with people. Like how hard could it be to just isolate them...?

I can't think of any other solution, honestly. (Castration? idk)

(that last one wasn't serious, btw. mutilation is mutilation. unless it was voluntary.)

We've tried castration, chemical and physical. It just doesn't work. The rapists still rape, but they use implements to do the assault and just get the mental stimulation the act brings.

You've got to remove the whole cognitive ability to prevent a recurrence. Mostly that's done with the death penalty right now.

the only reason that inmate is still alive is that his crime is kept from general population. if it ever got out what got him in prison, it would take less than a week for prison justice to work itself out.
