What did you want to tl;dr about?

Honestly curious. (Vegetarianism is relevant to my interests.) :3

It was something I wrote because it looked like the discussion upwards was going the way I'm always reading in my dashboard, which is full of battles between aggressive vegans and omnivores.

"Disclaimer: I've been a ovolactean vegetarian for almost ten years.

I'm always appalled by the arguments vegans use to defend themselves. Our arguments should stem from compassion. Maybe it's not in our biology to not eat meat at all, but it's a moral decision, and it should be respected and given the weight it has. Maybe it's not cheaper, but it's doable, and that's what matters.

What we want is a more loving world, in which we make other living beings suffer as little as possible. All the wank always surrounding vegetarianism and veganism doesn't do any favours to the cause.

We should also stop fighting each others. I've been looked down on by vegans, because being a vegetarian is not enough compromise for them, and that sucks. I live in a country with access to all kind of vegetables and fruits, but with little vegetarian/vegan culture; and there's a lot of vegan stuff people in first-world countries eat that's just not here."

It's very hippie, I guess, but it's how I feel. Of course I have a lot of rational arguments: micro and macro ecology, biological possibility of being a vegetarian versus eating meat only, the real paleodiet (primates eat fruit, roots, leafy greens, eggs, insects). But I think being compassionate is what should come on top of everything.

I like the way you think. :)

I'm a pescetarian and might go full vegetarian one day but I'll always be ovo-lacto. I really don't see myself going vegan.

I don't think it's morally wrong to eat milk, eggs, or honey if we're careful about how we treat the animals we obtain those materials from. Unfortunately in many places we're not careful and it's just as cruel as meat, but from where I stand with my limited budget I need to make sure I have enough protein. One day I might try to switch to only getting milk and eggs from markets and the like.

Yeah, aggressive vegans and aggressive omnivores both annoy me. lol.

(I don't know if I'd agree with your assessment of the "paleo-diet" though. Modern non-human primates might be herbivores and insectivores, but evolving humans were full omnivores and predators before the onset of agriculture.)

Thank you! :333

There are a lot of options, when it comes to compassion. Some go pescetarian, others don't eat meat unless they know the animal had a life up to ethical standards. It's what you say -> "from where I stand with my limited budget I need to make sure I have enough protein". I'd love it if nobody in the world ate meat at all, but there's a matter of culture too, entwined with a matter of what food you're able to get for you and your family at all - I'm specifically talking about people who live in "food deserts", or are part of an indigenous culture. In the end, we're have the privilege of being able to choose. I do hope that, in the future, the human race makes the switch completely, though.

Aggressive from both sides break my heart, but it's vegans who make me despair the most. I hate, hate to get my choice dissed in public by omnivores, but I can't jump to defend it if vegans are already there raging , because a lot of them are just so ignorant and mean :/ So nobody would want to get grouped with them. But sometimes I just do it anyway, because some omnivores are way too cruel, and-- I lose from both sides?

(The paleo-diet example is, of course, an assessment of the term when applied to the another extreme. I'm an Anthropology student :'D Both supposed "paleodiets" are wrong. Evolving humans were full omnivores before the onset of agriculture, BUT. We were not hunters depending on meat the way modern "paleodietists" want to make it appear. Most of the time, humans scavenged the carcasses of already hunted animals way onto the Homo Sapiens stage; and even after hunting started as a regular thing, meat was scarce.)

Ooh, thanks for the background! I'm taking one bio anthro class but probably don't know nearly as much as you lol.

Yeah, I'd love it if the world went meat-free in the future, or at least compassionate vegetarianism became more of a norm. But we're making progress. As technology continues to improve there will be ways for everyone to get all the protein and nutrients they need without meat, I think. Until then, I certainly don't begrudge anyone eating meat for health reasons, but I will always be uncomfortable with the "I eat it because I like it!" attitude because that basically means you are willing to inflict torture for your own pleasure - something many people do not want to think about, I believe. People just want to conveniently forget where meat comes from - it doesn't just appear on the shelf at the grocery store.

Yay, a fellow student! *hi5* I also must say, it's nice to be able to have this conversation. Thank you :DDD

People just want to conveniently forget where meat comes from - it doesn't just appear on the shelf at the grocery store. <- Yes, this exactly! It's such a sad thing :( People are very disconnected of that fact, and even if they are aware of it and uncomfortable, they do everything to act like they aren't and willingly forget about it. It's pure doublethinking.

I hope you're right about vegetarianism becoming more of a norm :333 Certainly now it's more frequent to be able to find veggie goodies to eat when one (for example) goes to eat to a restaurant, or buys groceries at the supermarket than ten years ago, even here. :3 Gives me hope! I also think that, given the low sustainability of the meat industry and the growing food needs of the world, other protein sources with lower costs will be developed and/or become mainstream. Let's hope those new foods will be available for everyone, not just people from industrialized nations. Surely there must be a way to, for example, fertilize previously barren terrains to grow more resistant soy/beans/lentil cultives in lands suffering from erosion.

The sustainability in issue with meat is becoming huge - people are really becoming aware of it and I think some are starting to choose vegetarianism mainly for environmental reasons. I think this is a good thing, and while cruelty is my primary reason for making the choice, the environmental concern is also very important. I definitely think that's going to be a motivating factor and I hope you're right about plant-based proteins becoming more popular. People will work on ways to make them more economical.

Keeping cows and chickens for milk and eggs makes sense to me, especially since children really can benefit from milk while developing. I want to ultimately switch to supporting local dairy and egg producers - I think those are very, very good things.

I'm not an anthro student - my major is zoology, but the bio anth class is an elective that ties nicely in with my major! Human evolution is very interesting. (Sadly my professor is a boring, monotonous drone. I really want to like the class! I don't, but I still like the subject material. lol.)

ETA: Not to be creepy, but you seem really cool so I went and looked at your journal, and noticed that you speak Spanish? (I assume from your profile, and your name?) Spanish is my minor :D

A short answer because I'm at my job now, but I really really wanted to tell you :DDD I was wondering if I could add you as well, so I'm glad you wanted to befriend me. It's not creepy, don't worry! I didn't do it first because I'm shy.

Indeed, Spanish is my first language (I'm Chilean). It's good to meet more people interested in the language. My journal is mostly original fiction and personal entries here and there, welcome! I hope I don't bore you, ahaha XD Friending back right now, ok? You seem really cool as well!

Aw, thanks! :3

How did you come to speak English so well?
lynx: (Default)

[personal profile] lynx 2013-03-06 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you for the compliment! u//u I only started to learn English in 6th grade in a bilingual school I got into that year. But I had to change again the next year, and the schools I went after that had an abyssal level in English. So I kinda learnt on my own? Reading books and fics and manga in English, and watching English subs. When I didn't knew a word, I first tried to deduce the meaning by the context, then looked it up. And worked my way up until I was able to read complex stuff. It's all thanks to the Internet :'3 I'm afraid that means my writing/reading skills are way better than my oral ones, though.

You're minoring in Spanish :D What kind of things do you like to read?
diet_poison: (Default)

[personal profile] diet_poison 2013-03-06 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, your writing is very impressive for learning on your own like that! I've been learning Spanish since 7th grade (about 9 years ago?) but I don't practice it nearly as much as I would like. I don't really read things in Spanish but I should; it would make me much better at it. orz

We could Skype sometime if you ever wanted to do a mutual exchange in language practicing. XD I love practicing my speaking skills and don't really get the opportunity to do that very often.

I'm kind of running out of Spanish classes to take, too. There isn't exactly a huge variety, especially of ones that are oriented towards speaking and conversation, which is what I really, really want to get better at.

Oh my god, I'm so so so very sorry about answering this late! ;; The notification arrived, but it got mixed up with my other mails and aaaaaaaaaaa /o\

Of course I'd love to Skype with you! I'm sure it will be loads of fun. My handle is bohemianlynx, add me whenever you like :D Let's hope timezones don't screw much with us, where are you from?

I hope you can find the Spanish classes you want to take. Reading is super important and helps a lot, but if you have travelling in mind, yes, definitively get classes oriented towards conversation.

Again, thank you for the compliments! ^//^ I spend a lot of time online, and the internet is very immersive when it comes to English. Almost everything is in that language, so one tends to adapt and learn as much as one can :3 For someone like me, who loves participating via fanfic, reaching people through writing is crucial.
