(Anonymous) 2013-03-02 10:14 am (UTC)(link)There is no getting away from the fact that Pistorius, prior to last summer, was seen as a fanstastic role model, and a thoroughly nice guy, handsome and adored. I feel his defeat at the hands of Oliveira (incredible talent, not actually cheating either, but that's another discussion) must have affected Pistorius deeply.
However, learning more about the general culture in South Africa, where woman are treated as no more than objects, is hard to swallow, and then there's the gun-owning factor.
There's little doubt he killed her, and as remorseful as he may be, he does deserve to pay the price, but it doesn't mean I don't feel sad for him as well. Even more sad for Reeva and her family, and all women in South Africa who suffer.
