Well, if he was shooting an intruder, he might not be tried for murder, even though there are strict rules for that in court in SA. The intruder is supposed to be coming at you or threatening your life.

If he HAD shot an intruder in the bathroom, I would bet he wouldn't be on trial. His story about not having his legs might be a point in his favor that he was vulnerable, and of course, famous, golden boy, etc. But yeah, this is not what happened here. If you hear a noise in the bathroom of your house where your girlfriend is, it's logically her using the bathroom. It's not a very good defense.
