Re: End of Evangelion and the Audience/Author Membrane
I hated the anime ending the first time I saw it since I didn't think much of the show pivoting from what I thought were increasingly interesting and subversive (didn't know that word at the time though), to a pile of preaching. So End of Eva felt so "perfect" to me because I thought bad ends were sooooo deeeeep, and also actual animation helped.
It wasn't until I rewatched the series that it started to grow on me, and probably well after reading about the the insane bits of jfen threatening Anno, about Anno, and budget/time constraints, etc. that I found I actually really liked the original ending. I'm a sucker for meta, so I love both.
and totally consider them both canon because THEORIESRe: End of Evangelion and the Audience/Author Membrane
I didn't hate the anime ending when I first saw it, but I felt like... how to put it? Like the game had changed when I wasn't looking. It was a positive ending, and I liked it, but it was something I definitively wasn't expecting from all the talk about the Human Instrumentality Project. Then, I watched The End of Evangelion. I loved it. I loved the dark, bleak ending and the mindscrew and the end-of-the-world scenario. I was 14 at the time and still new to the internet (I had started using it when I was 12); so the movie launched me to sites after sites of ANALYSIS and conspiracy theories, and I was totally sold on how deeeep it was.
I've been following the manga since then, and my love for EVA is something on the background that hasn't died. I've rewatched the anime several times, years after my first time... I had always felt connected to Shinji, and even more now, after I went through my depression - I feel like I understand him (yeah, I know). Every time, I've liked the anime ending more and this guy says exactly why. I've ended up preferring the story that ends with a sliver of hope and personal growth instead of the "rock falls, everyone turns into tang".
It's a matter of personal taste, of course. They're totally both canon 8Db
