[Les dossiers du Professeur Bell]

I don't think that's dumb. I think that's resourceful.

(If you charge into fandom treating your Google Translate version as authoritative, you may come off as dumb. But it's not dumb to read it that way.)

I've never heard of this but I just ordered the first in the series and a French dictionary.

D'oh! I hit the wrong reply link. Sorry!

There's nothing dumb about that. Sure, you should probably invest in a good French dictionary to back you up, but that's beside the point.

Either way, do buy it! That's the great thing about comics/BD/manga/whatever; you can still enjoy them by picture-reading.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-03 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
just buy it and find yourself unexpectedly learning French :0

(Anonymous) 2013-03-03 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Why is that dumb? I'm doing exactly that with some French comics I really like.

Note that Google Translate will get you about 95% of the way, but you will probably still run across phrases that you need to look up separately to figure out what they mean. (Like "dis donc", which means about 85 different things depending on context...)

I find that sweet.

*shrug* You might miss a lot of nuance that way but in general I think you'll get the basic meaning. You should take it with a grain of salt, of course. But if I were desperately looking for a translation from a language I don't speak at all (such as...French, lol) I might well do the same thing.

Holy shit, thank you for the unintentional rec. I speak French, and this looks right up my alley. I've always wanted to sort of getting into fandom through another language, but never really found something that interested me.

French is around 60% the same as English. Buy/torrent Michel Thomas French (he's dead, it's ok) then go through the 1950s Assimil (the new is terrible but the old is out of copyright and really good). Start reading the manga with a dictionary, noting new words and re-reading passages you now understand.
If you follow all of this you will be FLUENT in six months! :D

I was given a few audio files of that Michel dude, from my boyfriend. I really should start in on them sooner rather than later. Of course, what I need more is to learn how to read French.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-04 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
da I personally find it easier to understand written French than spoken French, so don't feel so daunted, it might be the same for you vOv

(Anonymous) 2013-03-04 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
This looks freaking amazing! I might do the same, OP. Just by looking at this I find myself accepting a new headcanon that this is basically a continuation (or maybe the prequel?) for Murder Rooms.

I tried to read a German novel through Google translate once. I got through like sixteen chapters before I gave up.

Some of Sergio Toppi's stuff has been translated, it might be possible that it might get translated soon. Maybe you should drop a line at Archaia Entertainment, the guys that did it. They could be interested based on that beautiful artwork alone. ;O
