Oh, I know.
I just wanted some touching Poirot friendship/case fic; went to AO3; and

NO

I, uh, um, folks... there's absolutely nothing wrong with you enjoying them as a couple... but

NO FRIENDSHIP FIC AT ALL? No friendship fic for Poirot and Hastings? I can't bring myself to understand it.

Have my sympathies, OP. Gen authors are almost always a fandom minority, which is fine, but sometimes it gets to the point when one either enjoys the works for the writing technique not for the tropes or GTFO.

Wow, there's no friendship fic for Poirot/Hastings...? That's so odd, they're practically a ~dream bromance~ (I always got a "chummier chums than Watson and his too-neurotic/cokeheaded Holmes" vibe from them, anyway).

Hmm. Maybe I should write some, then...

There are probably only two or three stories, and not of the highest quality either.

So: yes, please. Do write it. If nothing else, I will be ridiculously happy.

I know, right? I feel the same way about other slash-oriented fandoms. I don't mind it, but I'm really more into just friendship fic, especially in fandoms where it's canon.

1. Copy and paste a Penn/Teller slash fic you would otherwise want to read if not for the slash into a Word document
2. Find and replace all iterations of 'hot', 'sexy', 'jump his bones', etc with 'platonically respect(ed) and admire(d) as a friend'
3. Find and replace all mentions of genitalia with the words 'magic trick' (and occasionally 'Jonathan Ross' if there are multiple instances in a single sentence)
4. Republish the result under your own name as a letter to the editor of your local newspaper.
5. Go down to your local coffee shop, open the latest copy of your chosen newspaper, and enjoy.

Can someone explain to me why Penn and Teller have a fandom? What sets them apart from other performers? Is there a fandom, full of shipping and fanart for, say, the Blue Man Group?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-03 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
It wouldn't surprise me if there was.

P&T have a following because they've been around since the 80s with a really early internet presence, Broadway shows, done books, a movie, TV shows, tours, various cameo appearances, etc. They're also incredibly nice to their fans and stick around after shows to sign and pose for photos.

Except for their shows in Vegas where the cheapest tickets are about $150. Then they want nothing to do with their fans after their shows. Which is exactly why I'm no longer a fan since they were the only reason I made that trip. Oh, and the Vegas show doesn't include any material that isn't available on any of their DVDs and is the exact same stuff they did in the mid 90s on their HBO special (or maybe it was Showtime?).

(Anonymous) 2013-03-04 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
What? No. The cheapest tickets are a little over $80. (Granted, this doesn't include Ticketmaster's processing fees.) Not even VIP section tickets run $150. Don't know where/how you booked yours, but you were robbed.

They're also VERY well known for staying behind in the lobby after every Vegas show for a meet and greet with fans. You don't even have to buy a ticket, just show up after the show and say hi.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-04 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
their tickets weren't anywhere near that expensive when I saw them in Vegas and they did do the meet and greet afterwards every time. I've seen them seven or eight times in Vegas.

They're outspoken libertarians and militant atheists, and have a media presence related to that position (at least Penn does; although I believe Teller mostly shares his views, he is not nearly as visible in the public eye).

Ergo, the Internet fucking loves them.

the weird thing is that the taller dude is pretty republican (he claims to be "libertarian" and trust me, they are the SAME THING no matter how much the dudebros whine otherwise) and thus probably would be super butthurt about all gay sex the internet wants him to have with his bff

(Anonymous) 2013-04-14 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
The differences are that Jillette's anti-war, pro marijuana legalization and very, very atheist. And no, he wouldn't be butthurt by the slash, he'd probably be amused as hell. Dude's pro-porn and also kinky.
