I could have bought Moody being a Slytherin. I can see characters with a very particular kind of focus and self-determination and obstinacy being themselves and sticking to their own moral compass despite what their peers and mentors and motivational posters are saying they should do, and coming out of Slytherin as hard-edged take-no-prisoners badasses for good. But most preteens, in that kind of environment, are going to either conform or be absolutely miserable, or conform and be absolutely miserable.
