You can excuse it as a "magic (the sorting hat) knows what they'll turn out like ahead of time" or something along those lines, but I don't buy it, even in a fantasy world.

So you don't buy the idea that has the most logic behind it because it's too magical even for fantasy? Okay...

Is it a fantasy world with definite predestination, though? There aren't many prophecies, and mostly they're very obscure.

Nayrt

"There aren't many prophecies" - except for the piles and piles of them at the deparment of mysteries, or whatever it's called.

Well, if you can justify literally anything in a fantasy universe as "Well it makes sense because MAGIC!!!" you sort of lose the overall perspective of the work. It's less it's "too magical" and more it doesn't make sense to me-- a fantasy work still needs to make sense in most cases.

Harry Potter generally does a pretty good job of having its magical elements make sense to the overall work, but a random magical object that can immediately tell what kind of person you will be and what actions you may take based on the state of your prepubescent mind seems kind of off.

Depends on your interpretation, I guess.

ia - a fantasy world needs to have a set of rules that's consistent and makes sense and doesn't ignore things like human nature and decisions
