I don't see how people think the Wizarding society is better than Muggle society... I mean, I'm not saying I don't believe you, I do. I just don't understand that mindset because, uh, kind of the entire series was this huge not-really-subtle metaphor about racism and prejudice and war and these are not nice concepts that absolutely exist in the Wizarding world to a ridiculous degree. There's even, gasp!, murder.

Pretty much this, but I guess it's because of the combination of how the books were initially meant for children and wizardry being one of the major themes of the series. Since the characters clearly did not fall into the "evil witches and sorcerers" archetype, and in the beginning everyone was quite friendly and everything full of marvels and magic, the readership made them fall into the "fairies and good wizards" one.

Besides, Harry was insanely glad to get away from the Dursleys, and it must've enforced the impression of marvellousness and goodness the wizarding world had left upon both him and the readers.

Wizarding society is better than Muggle society because living in it means you have fucking magic and that's awesome

it's not really, like, morally superior or anything though

hmm, I didn't really get the impression that readers were supposed to think the wizarding world was better than the muggle world. I didn't think that - I just thought it was different, and hidden for their protection (or whatever reason). In fact the characters who DID think the wizarding world was clearly better were painted as the bad guys.

Harry thought Hogwarts was far better than living with Vernon and Petunia but that was because Vernon and Petunia were abusive and neglectful assholes. Also, I think he resented being completely cut off from wizarding society and culture in the summers when his friends weren't. But I don't think that is equivalent to him believing wizards were inherently better than muggles.

Yeah you're so right. How dare he prefer to be in the wizarding world where the only people who cared about him at all were. That fucking asshole, not wanting to be in places where he was mentally and emotionally abused just for the way he was born, and often locked up.
