It's always bothered me how seriously f*ed up Azkaban is. It is a prison where they literally psychologically torture people constantly ... and as far as we're shown it's their only/main prison. WHAT.

It's not really any different from a black site or Gitmo. Or frankly most US prisons given the prison rape statistics. If JK was a US citizen and not a Brit we'd all be arguing whether Azkaban was metaphor for a Super-Max or not.

Is it their only prison? I guess it might be; they did insinuate that time in Azkaban was only for the worst offenders, but perhaps they had strong fines or other non-prison punishments for relatively minor crimes.

There was another one, where Grindelwald was imprisoned, but I can't remember the name offhand. There may be several Azkaban-like prisons in different parts of the Wizarding world; I wish she'd made punishments for lesser crimes a little clearer.
