My impression is also that the hat takes a considerable amount of input from the sort-ee, that even if people don't get their first choice they probably won't get their last one. It's not an exact science. (Or else it's extremely unlikely all the Houses would be the same size.) But fucking up a kid's entire life for one stupid decision when they're eleven isn't that great, either.
