I'm the OP of the earlier secret complaining about Aranea/Mindfang. Weirdly, I did not make this one. I thought about making a secret saying "I told you so", but decided it would be premature.

I'm not sure this shows trolls are sociopathic so much as it shows Aranea is appallingly suggestible and does not hesitate to rearrange her moral awareness around whatever new idea is presented to her.

I think it has a lot to do with being an empath and wanting everyone to listen to her stories

OP HERE

I made this for all of us. The ones like you and me.

To clarify, I think they are sociopathic by human standards. But I do think we see that it's not so simple as "Alternia was a jerk planet where everybody was raised to be a jerk." But it's not just Arenea. Look at Meenah. Look at how casual everybody is about the fact one of them killed and crippled others. Meenah just got there, so we know it's not just time. To say nothing of her desire to kill Feferi every time she see's one.

They leave their babies to fend for themselves even in the more "compassionite society". They aren't going to suddenly realize humans morals are the best ways (or in one idiotic case I read, somehow turn to human concepts of love exclusively).

Re: OP HERE

I'm pretty sure Meenah's urge to kill Feferi is an instinct/psychic thing. Didn't she say she rationally didn't want to because she liked Fef and wished she could get to know her without that urge to kill getting in the way?

Yeah, but the fact that's even an issue is proof that Trolls are something very different from humans.

Yes. good. The "butt it's troll culture so it's ok!1" argument makes me cringe. Can't wait to see this turned on it's head.

Yeah, personally I think the context of them trying to stop a universe-eating demon should probably be taken into account here. While it may be a stupid and terrible idea to do it that particular way, they are under a lot of pressure to do something and she's trying to hurry it along. Doesn't make it a great thing to do and it's probably Darwin Award level stupid to boot, but it's not the same as mindfucking people just for kicks.

She seems to be enjoying it though.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-05 12:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, but she didn't start out doing it for the purpose of fun, as Mindfang did. Don't get me wrong, I can see an ominous slippery slope here, but this action is the top of the slope, not the bottom.

I'm enjoying this development too, though maybe not for the same reasons. But it might not necessarily mean that all trolls are this way? I mean, Vriska seemed really defensive on the issue, and Tavros was vaguely critical of it (though not enough to make a federal fuckin issue of it.) It might be more of a Vriska + Aranea thing (well, and Meenah's).

It would make sense in terms of character. Aranea's always had this power but never used it because of morality issues, and then here's Vriska, her persuasive badass charming dancestor who says it's all for the Greater Good, something that no doubt appeals to Aranea. Whereas Meenah has always been the dangerous one of her session, so her implicit approval of these tactics isn't surprising.

Basically, what I'm trying to say is we might need more examples of dancestors before we make any judgments. Although I agree that the whole society argument is quite annoying. Trolls definitely are more dangerous than humans, and it's not just the Alternian thing.

Vriska's a bad influence on everyone.

I like that Aranaea appears to be very Machiavellian or easily "logic"ed into just about anything. I just kinda wish more fans would be okay with liking douchebag characters without having to pretend they weren't douchebags.

It's a self-fulfilling prophecy. I notice this happens most with younger fans, because people often shame them for liking douchey characters, and God help you if you're a girl, that just means you're stupid and falling for Bad Boy Syndrome. Fandom is a weird place where you have to both acknowledge that your favorite is douchey and yet at the same time feel guilty for it so we know you're not a dumb fangirl. No sexism there.

This situation makes me really sad, honestly. I would have hoped that if Vriska and Aranea got together, Aranea would influence Vriska for the better, rather than Vriska influencing Aranea for the worse. =( I really don't like the way it's looking right now. It's making me really disappointed in Vriska, who I had kind of hoped would have a chance to redeem herself before she died (and after death when she met up with Tavros again, I wondered if that chance would come up again...)

otoh...well, it reveals some more unsavory parts of Aranea's personality, but it also makes her more complex and interesting. And it helps explain how post-scratch!Aranea grew up to be Mindfang when at first glance they seemed so very different. They actually do share some of the same underlying traits.

Aranea really needs a moirail...

also Aranea looks really awesome in that outfit

(Anonymous) 2013-03-05 01:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I really agree about Vriska. She's a great big pile of personality disorders, but right before she died it seemed as if she might be starting to understand about actions having consequences and maybe it would be a good idea to think things through more carefully. I think being in the virtually consequence-less dreambubbles didn't do her any good, and Tavros is not doing anyone any good trailing around after her even though he disagrees with a lot of what she's doing. Their relationship has always been toxic, but it seems to be becoming co-dependent. :-(

We probably should have taken it as more of a warning sign that Aranea's only friend was Meenah, upon whom she had next to no mitigating influence.

Yeah, I feel Tav is kind of enabling her at this point by following her around and acting like she's the coolest shit. She's also still being a big jerk to him. =( That was another thing - before Tav died he was just starting to find some courage, and I don't think that worked out very well for him. He tries to stand up to Vriska but when she dismisses him he just...goes with it. He seems really desperate to earn her validation (because he doesn't really have anyone else). I adore both Tavros and Vriska, they're two of my favorite characters, but I also think they're really bad for each other. They need to spend some time apart and in the influence of other people.

Aranea...yeah. I guess I always thought the reason she didn't have a lot of friends is that she annoyed everyone (and everyone around her was consumed with teen drama at the time) and she was kind of aloof, preferring to observe rather than interact. But it definitely could run deeper than that.

Poor Aranea. She really does have good intentions...but it seems to be so easy to lead her astray.

I rather hope John can be a good influence on them but I don't think he'll be around long enough to make a difference. If he stuck with Vriska for a while, I think she would start to care that he was openly disapproving of her behavior (which he's already starting to do). Meenah certainly doesn't give a shit - she just wants loot - and Vriska's way too used to shoving Tavros around to listen to a word he says.

Aradia's place in this whole mess kind of confuses me. I can see why she's helping Vriska - after all, what she's doing is important - but you'd think she would be Not Okay with her behavior...but then again Aradia can be mysterious, and while she cares deeply about her friends, does she really see strangers the same way? Also her position as Maid of Time and the creation of all those time-drones might have led her to take on a flippant attitude towards copy-ghosts or whatever they are - see them as not as valuable as the original person, and thus disposable tools of war. She did that to all her own copies, after all, and either didn't care or thought it was a price worth paying.

Honestly having to do what Aradia did could kind of mess up a person. I haven't even really thought that much about it until now...

oh, wait, this secret is saying the sexy mindrape is a bad thing? I was about to agree with it. I totally welcome the sexy mindraping spider overlords. and morally compromised characters.
