(Anonymous) 2013-03-05 12:22 am (UTC)(link)I'm not sure this shows trolls are sociopathic so much as it shows Aranea is appallingly suggestible and does not hesitate to rearrange her moral awareness around whatever new idea is presented to her.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-05 12:36 am (UTC)(link)To clarify, I think they are sociopathic by human standards. But I do think we see that it's not so simple as "Alternia was a jerk planet where everybody was raised to be a jerk." But it's not just Arenea. Look at Meenah. Look at how casual everybody is about the fact one of them killed and crippled others. Meenah just got there, so we know it's not just time. To say nothing of her desire to kill Feferi every time she see's one.
They leave their babies to fend for themselves even in the more "compassionite society". They aren't going to suddenly realize humans morals are the best ways (or in one idiotic case I read, somehow turn to human concepts of love exclusively).

It would make sense in terms of character. Aranea's always had this power but never used it because of morality issues, and then here's Vriska, her persuasive badass charming dancestor who says it's all for the Greater Good, something that no doubt appeals to Aranea. Whereas Meenah has always been the dangerous one of her session, so her implicit approval of these tactics isn't surprising.
Basically, what I'm trying to say is we might need more examples of dancestors before we make any judgments. Although I agree that the whole society argument is quite annoying. Trolls definitely are more dangerous than humans, and it's not just the Alternian thing.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-05 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)It's a self-fulfilling prophecy. I notice this happens most with younger fans, because people often shame them for liking douchey characters, and God help you if you're a girl, that just means you're stupid and falling for Bad Boy Syndrome. Fandom is a weird place where you have to both acknowledge that your favorite is douchey and yet at the same time feel guilty for it so we know you're not a dumb fangirl. No sexism there.

otoh...well, it reveals some more unsavory parts of Aranea's personality, but it also makes her more complex and interesting. And it helps explain how post-scratch!Aranea grew up to be Mindfang when at first glance they seemed so very different. They actually do share some of the same underlying traits.
Aranea really needs a moirail...
also Aranea looks really awesome in that outfitno subject
(Anonymous) 2013-03-05 01:41 pm (UTC)(link)We probably should have taken it as more of a warning sign that Aranea's only friend was Meenah, upon whom she had next to no mitigating influence.

Aranea...yeah. I guess I always thought the reason she didn't have a lot of friends is that she annoyed everyone (and everyone around her was consumed with teen drama at the time) and she was kind of aloof, preferring to observe rather than interact. But it definitely could run deeper than that.
Poor Aranea. She really does have good intentions...but it seems to be so easy to lead her astray.
I rather hope John can be a good influence on them but I don't think he'll be around long enough to make a difference. If he stuck with Vriska for a while, I think she would start to care that he was openly disapproving of her behavior (which he's already starting to do). Meenah certainly doesn't give a shit - she just wants loot - and Vriska's way too used to shoving Tavros around to listen to a word he says.
Aradia's place in this whole mess kind of confuses me. I can see why she's helping Vriska - after all, what she's doing is important - but you'd think she would be Not Okay with her behavior...but then again Aradia can be mysterious, and while she cares deeply about her friends, does she really see strangers the same way? Also her position as Maid of Time and the creation of all those time-drones might have led her to take on a flippant attitude towards copy-ghosts or whatever they are - see them as not as valuable as the original person, and thus disposable tools of war. She did that to all her own copies, after all, and either didn't care or thought it was a price worth paying.
Honestly having to do what Aradia did could kind of mess up a person. I haven't even really thought that much about it until now...
